New Gearbox

Does anybody know if the new 5 speed from an NB goes in to
an NA. Box looks the same except around the gearchange
which seems bulkier with a square housing at the top.

It would be a nice addition to the 1.8. Granted a six speed
would be nicer but lets not go crazy.

The first question is, why bother?

No, I meant, why put in an NB when there's no difference to an NA. By the way,
what happened to your gearbox? They're supposed to be near bulletproof, unless
you're making serious power.

There was a change to the gearbox in 94 to improve the
syncro on second (according to my reading). My box is
gritty in second and has done 160k. Ross has an NB box with
very low ks at a price that would rival a rebuild of my box.
I just don't know if it will go in.

Have you tried a synthetic gear oil? It made a big difference to shifting in
my 1.6. It's done 200,000km, 80,000 with the JRSC and it's still fine.

No I haven't. It's on my list to try but given engine and
box are coming out in the next month I was being mean and
not changing the oil. However if I was to it is a
worthwhile investment to make now as I may avoid the cost of
the new box. I did a post a few weeks ago about this. What
oil are you using? What is an easy to access brand that I
can do a quick trial with?

I'm using Amsoil at present, but I've heard Redline is good too. Amsoil are in
New Lynn Auck. Kendall Performance on the Shore do Redline.

Ive done some searching on the net, and it seems like
you cant use the NB gearbox as it has a different
speedo drive(Electronic head Vs cable drive), and you
have to buy a short shift kit to fit into the Nb box
as it has a longer shifter stick than the Na
. i think you have to use the Nb starter (3 mounting
bolts rather than two) and tailshaft also but cant be 100% on that one.
your best bet would be a Na 1800 gearbox from a
94-97.

What sort of noise is your suspect input shaft bearing making Glenn?
I'm wondering if mine is the same problem.

Its making a whirring noise, kind of like a lathe or
drill press does. it slows to a stop as i depress the clutch.

no, do what I did : wait til the car jams into reverse on the motorway,
reverse onto the shoulder and call a towie, watch the tow truck get stuck in
the mud, have to reverse 500 metres to a dry spot, tell the towie why he has
to lift the back wheels off the ground..., deal with the garage's parts
supplier quoting $1000+ for a new gearbox (and by refusing to match
MazdaSpeed's price of $550+gst : losing his customer) buying the gearbox
myself, delivering it to the garage, getting it back without that funny
whine I'd got used to...

Hi Glenn : $550 plus GST = $618.75 for a reconditioned box
paid another $65 + gst for a six month/10,000 km warranty.

As to how I got it into reverse - still haven't worked that one out. Was
slowing for a traffic jam, while talking on the phone...

my bad.

Hi Mr K - the stuck-in-reverse problem has happened to a few people that I
know of (not on the motorway though...) and is supposedly caused by the
reverse light switch internals. Usually if the switch is popped out and
reinstalled everything is back to normal. Did you really need a new box?

Hiya zorruno.
When the car got back to CBD they dismantled the box and found an inline
shaft has slipped and become damaged : the quote for replacing the part and
reassembling the box was $1200 +gst (mostly labour), so I took the cheap
option = replace the whole box.
