Just don't understand it! My car's fine in town on short runs but once out
on the motorway the temperature gauge goes well over to the H area. After I
turn on the heater to try to get rid of all the hot air , the guage returns
to the middle with no apparent problems. I've drained and re-filled the
radiator but alas the problem persists and has done for the last few weeks.
Any ideas!

I've seen these symptoms before... the radiator was partially blocked and needed to be removed, the endtanks taken off and the tubes 'rodded' to clear the blockage. Pretty straightforward operation for a radiator shop. Apparently the centre of the radiator is cooler than the rest if this is the case.
When blocked like this the radiator has just enough capacity to reject the heat of city driving, but not the constant load of motorway cruising.
Anyway, hope that helps.
