Noisy Gearbox

Post by pjenkins » Thu Jul 17, 2003 5:22 pm

Did anyone get to the bottom of this? My car has had it for years but
problem was worsened gradually and particularly after a new clutch was
fitted to get rid of the squeeky clutch pivot arm.
Sounds like it could be the diff but difficult to pinpoint even by my
mechanic who had it for a day and tried various things.
Worst on overrun and in lower gears but disappears when the drivetrain is
loaded up or when clutch disengaged and sounds like a worn bearing rattle -
very metallic.
Any advice welcome.

Did anyone get to the bottom of this?
I had some gearbox work done a few years ago. It was not entirely
successful, and Greenlane Mazda came to the party on some fixits;
but noise on overrun in low gears continued, and I lost interest in
chasing it up.

So anyway, it sounds naff but has been the same for ?3 years so I
have learned not to worry about it and concentrate on the sound of
fresh air rushing past me.

I have exactly the same problem with my 89. Took it to Mazda on the
North Shore and they have suggested bearing replacement. Work is being
done at the moment. I will let you know when I get the car back if it
was successful.
