1.8 in my 1990

Sorry Fletch, it doesn't matter it the engine is a Model T or the latest drive
by wire Merc, the basic principle is the same. The crank angle sensor is the
modern equivalent to the distributor. As you know, it is mechanically linked
to the camshaft and reads the rotation of the cam and thereby the crank. There
has to be a method of determining which valves/pistons are doing what before
the spark can ignite the compressed fuel/air mixture. The electronics fire the
spark, the mechanicals determine the order it has to be fired in
I think you may be confusing the determination of firing order which is purely
mechanical and the control of ignition advance curve, which is now
electronic.

I have exactly the same problem with my 89. Took it to Mazda on the
North Shore and they have suggested bearing replacement. Work is being
done at the moment. I will let you know when I get the car back if it
was successful.
