Gritty gears
Hi
My 1990 has a slow syncro on second gear. Improves as the car warms but
is never really slick. Is this how they are or do I have a problem?
Can I improve things with synthetic oil or is that just a false hope?

Generally, they are all like that to some degree, especially the early ones
like yours and mine.
Type of oil can have some effect at changing the feel, and also there is a
"shift turret" that needs oil too... basically to lubricate the lever pivot
mechanism... but don't expect miracles...
Fletch.

Lou, where can you get Amsoil from locally?
I picked up some Redline MTL from Kendall Racing
supplies but it's made the shifting more "visceral"
... I'll try something else if I can.
Funnily enough, my sister's newly acquired '90 shifts
like a dream!

They're based in New Lynn, 827 8442. I don't know if they sell direct to the
public, try calling for a local dealer.
Interesting comment on Redline, the Yanks rave about it.
I found Amsoil much better than Castrol synthetic.

MInes not a grinder, but I definately have to be a little slower and more deliberate with shifting 1st to 2nd, esp when cold (93, 97,000km). A friends 92 is identical. Looking on Miata.net, there's plenty to read on this subject. Most people advocate synthetic oil in the 'box, and changing the turret oil, but reading the responses of people who have tried this, the outcome seems about as variable as the severity of the problem in the first place. I don't worry about it, and find it minimally irritating.

put valvoline syntrans gear oil in the trans 75w/85w mazda boxs dont
like thick oil in them,it will feel much better, changing the oil in the
gear shift housing wont fix it ,as the shaft only goes backwards and
forwards ,its the syncro and hubs in the trans that do the work,if that
doesnt work fix the problem in the trans>glenn munro

The club web site has a page on changing the rubber shift boot, which is
more or less what you need to do to change the turret oil.
http://www.mx5club. org.nz/maintenance/shift_boots/ As for the tappet
noise... when I hear that I know it's time to change my oil. It's quite
a handy reminder. On Mon, 23 Jun 2003 17:44:46 +1200, Muscles wrote: >Can

I hate "me too" contributions to egroups but this needs reinforcing:As for the tappet noise... when I hear that I know it's time to

"yes, that's right!"
