Hey! What is this club/list about?

Post by Ross Bryon » Fri May 16, 2003 10:04 am

I'm a new MX5 owner, a new club member, and new to this list.

I am also a bit dismayed. This list seems to be overwhelmed by
anecdotal, ill-informed and virulently negative opinions under the
heading "Why we should hate...". And the gratuitous comparisons and
references to Nazi regimes and the Jewish holocaust are, to put it
mildly, embarrassingly immature and way over the top.

Okay, there are some issues worthy of some discussion, but let's get a
grip and keep things in proportion... and appropriate to the
environment.

What is this club (and this list) about, anyway?

It is a group of people with a common interest - even passion - about
our great little sports cars?

Or is club dominated by the over-politicised axe-grinders who have been
spewing out all these "hate e-mails".

If the latter, I am profoundly disappointed.

Hi Ross, and welcome. As you say this list is all about the enjoyment of our cars. I will put my hand up and take responsibility for starting the "why we should hate our police thread". I did it specifically to be provocative and out of frustration. I am a perfectly reasonable person, definitely not a political type... but I feel my rights to enjoy myself are beginning to be trodden on by our government. As an individual my voice has little relevance to them.

The most constructive action that could be taken would be for the club committee to convene a group to focus on just the issues that bother us all and which could be best represented on a club basis, perhaps carrying more weight.

In recent weeks those issues have included, small stick on number plates (we care about how our cars look), the potential for random failure of our cars at WOF tests due to the vague ruling on exhaust systems, and the ongoing madness of the simplistic focus of our police force on what many see as revenue gathering in the name of road safety.

yep usually the list is about the important things like 'red is the fastest
colour', 'only the original 1989/1990 models are the true classics','why do
people drive around with their tops up/hard tops?'.
