new soft top?!$

Post by Graeme & Gretchen » Tue Jan 28, 2003 8:19 am

Hi there from Invercargill

I need a new soft top..rather than re-invent the wheel please tell me where
and the cost ($$$$) of purchasing a new soft top for a 1990 MX5.
We would need to get it to Invercargill so are there freight charges and is
the price GST inclusive??

Thanks for your help fellow MX5ers, as I know some one out there will have
already done all the homework recently.

I'd be interested in a price comparison across NZ too.

FYI, Here is a Wellington retail price list excl GST

MX5 tops fitted
1. PVC top with plastic, $1,185
2. PVC top with hard glass, $1,385
3. Canvas top with plastic, $1,585
4. Canvas top with hard glass, $1,785

They can do things like a silver soft top too.

Replacement window fitted
1. Hard glass curtain $535
2. Plastic window, sewn, $250
3. Plastic window, welded, $385

You can see them at

Say you're an MX5 club member and what discount will they do.

A new glass window top cost me $1700 approx. in '98. The glass window is a
huge improvement if you can stretch to it.

Can you fit a glass backed softtop to a MK1?

If so what year/ spec had them? Where they heated?

Can you fit a glass window inplace of the PVC one??

The NB (99+) top will fit on a NA model. Seems like a
good idea as you don't need to fiddle around with
zipping/unzipping the window before dropping the top!

Those prices I posted before had a fitted Hard glass curtain for $535. It
was a 3rd party curtain and wasn't heated.

You can probably do anything if you're prepared to pay, including having
them make a custom heated one, if you could source the right glass and had
the $$$.

Yes.
They're aftermarket only, unless you adapt a MK2 roof.
Maybe, depends on original roof.
