Tires: This is not Kansas Toto

Post by Bill Rehm » Sun Dec 19, 2004 8:52 pm

I've just been Goggle searching for 2 days trying to find some reviews
for Grid 3s and C-Drives. Why is it all the major review web sites don't
have either tire listed however have all these other names for
Bridgestone and Yokohama tires?

Is NZ relegated to some 3rd world tire numbering/name system??? :-)

Someone please educate me.

Bill

From what ive read, many northern countries use winter
and summer tyres, meaning that youre search will be
limited to countries like New Zealand that use "all
season" tyres like Australia.

That makes sense because any one day of the year in NZ can offer winter
summer, spring or fall ---- with, based on recent weather, winter and
summer exchanging places! :)

Bill,

I have used this site http://www.tirerack.com in the past to see how people
rate the tyres ( http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyresults/index.jsp ),

eg the max performance
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/surveyres ... sp?type=MP

so ppl rate the goodyear eagle Ff1 GS-D3 about the best.

plus they also do some specific tests.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/testSearch.jsp

and tirerack rate the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 as tops.

We have the GS-D3 s on our 2002 wrx and we are very happy with the wet and
dry performance.

They have now done 30K Kms and are still good for another 10K. the original
potenzas Re 010s stuck better in the dry (just) but nowhere near as good in
the wet and only lasted 20K kms.

If I needed street tyres for the mx5 I would get GS-D3s.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the analysis. However as previously stated I had Grid2s, and
I got more than 45K out of them and they were great. However, the new
Yokohama C-Drive is "supposedly" better than the award winning Yokohama
A539s.

Reference analysis of Yokohama:
* C-Drives new and unproven technology: yes (just released in
Europe 9 months ago)
* Historically Yokohama a "leading edge" performer: absolutely!

Based on compound analysis and my research (based on the limited info
available on the C-Drives) I conclude the following:
* The Yoko C-Drives will be better in wet conditions than Grid3s
* Grid 3s might give me an extra 10k life due to compound
make-up (ask me if I care)
* The C-Drives will offer a "softer" ride (that is a certainty)
and important to me.
* C-Drives may be slightly noisier than Grid3s (but hell, with
my new sound system turned up, am I likely to really care - or notice!)

I had the previous (GS-D2)version of the goodyear eagles on my last 5 in the Uk, and I'll be replacing my tyres here with the GS-D3s when required. They lasted well, and were amazing in the wet...something that may be of benefit here..especially this week (when is the summer going to arrive??) :0(

Graeme

See my analysis sent yesterday as to why I went with the Yoko C-Drives
over the Grid3s.
