Cooling water leak... bugger!... and Help please...

Post by poison » Wed Dec 08, 2004 10:16 pm

I just moved the MX to find a big pool of toxic green (bloody BRG probably)
water under the car, I replaced the upper and lower radiator hoses 3 weeks ago
and all seemed well for a couple of rides. But now it's dripping like
a...errr... thing that drips a lot...

Anyway it's not the new hoses and the heater ones seem OK too (as far as I can
tell). It seems to be coming out from under the engine. It's too late to
remove the plastic panel so I was wondering if anyone has any idea's... maybe
the water pump as I can't even see where that is? and can't reach below either
to see if it's wet, can't see too much even with a torch.

So has anyone had a cam belt done on the shore... where is good for the cam
belt... any idea's? not sure the car will make it to City Garage in town, and
when I rang a few months ago for an estimate they were kind of expensive...

Cheers

I knew a guy who has his own, not franchise, "mechanic will travel"
mobile mechanic business. He did my
cam and water pump at that time I considered a reasonable cost - but as
said that was a few years (3) ago.

His name is Marcus, and his mobile # was 027 274 9499 . Mention my name
when you call. See if he is still in business and if his charges are
still reasonable

Bill

that sounds ominous - why did you replace the pipes? That is the first
place I'd look.
It seems to be coming out from under the engine.
I had the water pump replaced recently and the new found pressure caused
a leak in the hose at the back of the block going to the heater core. I
had to remove the cam sensor (back right of the block on my 1.8, other
side on your 1.6) to replace it.
It's too late to remove the plastic panel so I was wondering if

what do you mean too late? (late pm?) can't you fill it with water again
and search for the leak?
So has anyone had a cam belt done on the shore... where is good for

not on the shore sorry. There are a number of Howtos around if you want
to do it yourself - time consuming, but doesn't look too hard (never
done one though, but have 'observed' a couple of times)
not sure the car will make it to City Garage in town, and when I rang
a few months ago for an estimate they were kind of expensive...
I got my Mitsi flatbed towed to City Garage a while ago - I'm an AA
member and they'll tow X number of Kms max. I paid the balance of the
tow which was $10 from ellerslie (got a quote from AA first). City
garage are very good, but yes, they charge city prices.

Hi Howie :-)

I said it was too late, because it was too late and I wanted to go to bed.
Anyway pulled off the plastic panel beneath the motor today and there is water
coming down around the main front pulley, so it does look like the water pump
seals have gone. So I guess I'll do the cam belt too, I'll ring some places
tomorrow.

Gazza I just had mine done at a local garage, Owner has a Z3 and likes
all roadsters, anyway he only charged 260$ labour, for pump, belt, seals, and
acc belts and he loctited the crankbolt to 85lb{shortnose crank}

while your'e doing the pump do the crank and cam seals as well as the
belt, both mine were weeping, by the way water pump at supercheap is under
100$ and generic seals were 12$ instead of originals at over 40$, so shop
around and get your own parts.

I beg to differ in respect to using a 'cheap' priced water pump. Why
would you want to risk having to replace your water pump (with all the
labour additional involved) should it fail earlier than a better quality
pump? Replacing a water pump is very labour intensive opposed to the
cost of the pump.

I had a chat with Tom at Auto Clutch who sells water pumps (20% discount
to club members) who explained it to me.

Make sure you check out the small coolant lines that exit at the bottom of
the thermostat housing. It would be a shame to do all that work for just
one of those little guys. I have been having overheating problems on the
1.8 which I have just solved by having the radiator taken apart and all the
gunk cleaned from the core. Symptoms were: Engine goes to temp OK stay
there for a while then begins to get hot - gauge would fluctuate between
nominal and the H mark. Changed the cap and the thermostat to no avail.
The guy at Trevor Morris said the core was really blocked up. Cost $90 with
me handing over the radiator rather than the car.

Good luck
