Handbrake produces burning smell... and poor engine performa

Post by Peter Mayes » Tue Nov 16, 2004 5:00 pm

Hi Folks,

Has anyone ever had their rear brakes stay locked on
long after the handbrake has been released? It's
accompanied by a loud clunk and massive acceleration
when it frees up.

(I think it's the rear brakes, that's where the smoke
smell was coming from.)

I haven't but many others have - but I bet your brake slider pins are
frozen which is a reasonable common occurance after doing no brake
maintenance for a long while.

You have to take the calipers apart and lube the slider pins reasonably
regularly to prevent this. It is one of the few MX5 maintenance items
that I am actually confident doing myself so it is not very hard :0)

It might need a new caliper/brake pads/rotor and more work if is at that
stage now though...

cheers
