Rain Leaks

Post by r.v.boxall » Mon Nov 15, 2004 5:00 pm

Subject Change please?

It's chucking it down with rain in New Plymouth, and I've got a puddle in the footwell on the driver's side, with no visible leaks coming in. Any ideas, anyone, please? Hood seals all seem okay.
[...]
[quote]I cant imagine Im the only person with this problem on
their car. So any thoughts please? There are some rubber
pads at the inside of the guards where the bonnet closes but
they dont seem to do much, maybe this is part of the
problem.

Cheers

Just had the same thing but fixed it yesterday.
If you open the bonnet and look up where the window wiper
linkages are, look for a hole there. Mine was a 6mm hole
where a bracket spot welded up under the dash had given way.
If in doubt, I can show you as I'm in New Plymouth myself. Let me know

Phil,

Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look in the morning for a hole. I apologise to all for butting in, but I'm a first time user, bought the MX5 two weeks ago, it's brought driving pleasure back into our lives after 40 years of driving! I'm not sure about the protocol of joining a conversation, or starting a new one, so if I am being rude, please someone tell me. Oh, harking back to an earlier conversation, the GREEN ONES ARE SPECIAL! Who wants to stick out like a dog's goolies in red or ugh! yellow!

Phil,

I just went out with a torch, and can see what looks like a spot weld up
under the plate that comes down over the wiper linkage, but that looks okay,
and seems to be in a vertical surface. I can't see any holes in the big
drain channel below the wiper linkage. I'll have another look in daylight
tomorrow.

Well to be honest I have to agree with Ron who said "GREEN ONES ARE
SPECIAL!"... of course they are, and the people who drive them are special
too... just like those kids who were in the "SPECIAL" class at school. But you
are one sick **** if you've got a dog with Red or Yellow goolies... :-)...
ha ha ha...

Hey, Gazza, a dog's a dog, whatever colour its goolies are! and, what was wrong with our "Special" class? It's not just green, otherwise it'd look like a Kawazaki bike, it's "British Racing Green", understated, like all good Brit things, not like the flashy gross Italian Red, or even worse, Froggie Yellow! But, the bloody thing still leaks!

Well, you could try getting someone to run hose over it
while you're looking ynder the dash.
I'm at home today, so can give you a hand if you like. 021 1309468
I only bought mine about a month ago so am new to them also.
Luckily from what you're saying mine isn't red, yellow or green :)
Heavy rain coming I just heard on the radio for New Plymouth too :)

Phil,

Thanks for your support! I got caught in that rain on the way back to work, which is where I'm stuck today. I still haven't been able to get to the car in daylight, to have another look for the hole you suggested, when it isn't raining! It's too wet inside the car to try the hose test yet, it'll have to wait till it dries, hopefully after the weekend, then I'll do it. I've got a wet vacuum cleaner at home, so that will get rid of most of the water, so that we can use it for a trip to Martinborough this weekend, which should complete the dryout. Where did you buy your MX, at Wade Cars? They've evidently got 7 of them!

I went to Wades, but the ones they had weren't too flash.
They put me down on the books but never got back to me.
Ended up buying a white 94 on trade me. Its had a couple of
mods already done to it so that saved me a bit.
Have you joined the MX5 club? I will be next month, as I
finish work then, so gotta do something over summer :)
Good luck on the water thing.

What's wrong with black - I have a black beauty and she polishes up well.
B...r to keep clean though. But if you luv your car this won't matter.

Phil,

I gave the floor a vacuum tonight, and got rid of most of the damp. There's
a wet patch on the rear shelf, just behind the driver's ear, here the zip
for the rear window is, so perhaps its coming in at the hood seal. More time
needed!

I agree with you about Wade's cars, I wasn't impressed,

Regards,

Ron

Comute through the gorge! Not a bad thing in an MX5 :)
I know what ya mean. Came back form Hamilton last week and
the same thing. Just keep the same speed and just steer.
Leaves most behind except the more determined types.

Phil,

Something funny happened here! The history makes it look as though the "commute through the Gorge" bit cam from me, but it didn't. I've got a green machine, not silver, and my only experience of driving it through the gorge was at night, without panel lights, on the way back from Kumeu, from where I bought it. It wasn't a question of holding a speed, I had no idea of my speed anyway, apart from sound, and that's not a good indicator! Specially when I'd only 3 hours experience with the car.

So, would the lucky person who commutes through the Awakino Gorge in his MX please identify himself? Or, have I missed something in the history trail?
