Targa

Interested in your following the Targa. An article for TopDown would be a
good idea. I assume you were just following it as an individual or were you
on the Targa Tour. I've wanted to do this for some time but have seen very
little information about it. Anybody done the Targa Tour and was it
worthwhile? Perhaps next year the club could organise something for those
wanting to follow it. It's not a cheap exercise, especially as I would have
to add in the costs of crossing Cook Strait as well. I wonder if Blue Bridge
might like to offer a discount to club members!

Targa

Post by dscotland » Fri Nov 05, 2004 8:59 am

I am trying to organise my car for the actual targa next year but if that
falls through I would be very keen on targa tour. An MX5 team would look
great

Did anyone see the immaculate Aussie mx5 on this years targa? Had a look
and a chat to the guy at Pukekohe racetrack the saturday before the targa
started. It wasn't too hotted up or anything, just a great clean example
of a Mk1

While I'm typing, does anyone know the drag co-efficients of mk1 mx5's
with roof up and down. When I'm racing at Pukekohe my car gets an extra
5kph of speed down the back straight with the roof up, so roof down
creates quite a lot more drag...

Targa

I was going to do the Tour this year but at $1600 odd for entry I decided it
could be better spent on the car as I'm also targeting the Targa next year but
the first event will be the 2 dayer based in Tauranga in June next year
(replacing the Bambina and Dash). The car will remain basically standard. The
roll bar is in (the soft top has to be workable - Wife's orders!!), the belts
will be going in tomorrow (belt cut outs in the backrest of the standard
seats), I have the tyres and rims and MX5Mart suspension braces. All the
paperwork is done and log book obtained. Apart from the fire extinguisher, the
intercom and the tripmeter that's about it.

I had a quick chat with the Aussies at Upper Hutt and they had had a good run.
They don't carry a spare as it doesn't fit anywhere! The space saver would be
classified as one of the 6 allowable tyres if they carried that. The one thing
they did say was to ensure the exhaust is as high as possible as it will take
a pounding, and have a flexible coupling between the headers and the main
pipe. The silver MX5 took a liking to the scenery and decided to go no further
and the ChCh MX5 was also sporting front end damage at Upper Hutt.

See you in Tauranga in June??

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark, I note your comment that you are looking to build a Targa car.
Have you thought about what diff you will use? I was going to Targa my
wife's MX5 a couple of years ago but decided against it. I go as far as
rebuilt engine and obtaining one of the 99 low ratio diff but decided
the car was too nice. The diff is a type II Torsen and had done 1900 km
when I bought it from Mazdaspare. The ratio is 4.30:1 as opposed to
4.10:1 and raises the rpm approximately 300 or 7km in 5th. It certainly
gives it harder acceleration right through the gears. From talking to
the Targa guys last year, they both used the 4.3:1 ratio.

If you are interested in it, let me know. It's a great fit and forget
performance boost.

Rgds
