Yesterday on a trip to Taupo our radiator top tank cracked and emptied the
entire contents of our radiator onto the road, trapping us in Mangaweka for
three hours.
Has this happened to anyone before?
Does anyone know if you can get alloy replacements for a 1991 NA? (it was
plastic).
Thanks,
Allister and Belinda

Yes, it happened to me at Mapua, half way between Nelson and Motueka on
Anzac Day, 2003. I had my car trucked back to Nelson (courtesy of AA
membership) where it was repaired by replacing the top tank with a new one.
The replacement is plastic as well. This is normal for most vehicles these
days. While the repair was being done, the front belts were replaced as
well. My car had done about 150,000km at the time. The radiator was
thoroughly cleaned and checked before reinstalling. The radiator man gave it
a clean bill of health. Since then, the car has run slightly cooler with the
temperature guage being very stable throughout the year no matter how it's
being driven. Before then, the temperature fluctuated and would rise
slightly on a hot day, so the cleanout and flush probably did a lot of good.
Total cost of the repair was around $250.00 incl GST.
Our MX5 is a 1992 V-spec. It's more than 30,000km since then with no other
problems.

My '91 developed a crack in it back in 2000 and it r3equired the top
section to be replaced. I inquired at that time about some alloy-type
replacement but none is apparently available. I don't recall how much it
cost for a replacement plus labour but I took it to some place in
Onehunga

Allister,
you can get all-alloy radiators made by Koyo (Japanese) or PWR (Aussie). You can see them on the mx5mania.com.au, or good-win-racing.com site!
Probably not worth it for the average punter tho' ...
hope that helps,
Jeff

I would appreciate someone's input on MX5, 1998, NZ new, 5 speed manual,
hard top and soft top, 45 Kms on the clock? Also is there much
difference between 5 speed and 6 speed manuals in terms of performance?
