Do you use MaxNet? Yes YOU!

Post by Rex Johnston » Fri Oct 01, 2004 8:15 am

I'm getting sick of this. I've had the best part of 20 virus laden
emails from someone on maxnet,
and it's been like this for months. My last plea here was ignored, my
next one will be to
abuse@maxnet.co.nz

How do i know you are on this list? I create a different email address
for each list i'm on, and
i rotate them when cr*p like this happens.

Rex

PS Your last IP address was 202.89.42.4, and you run some lame excuse
for a firewall as ping probles
are blocked, you have "Worm/NetSky.P".

What the hell are you on about ?. Can't you analyse the headers and work out who
you should be addressing ?

Unfortunately not. The virus has its own SMTP routines, it comes
directly to my mail server, with its own faked
from addresses intact. I've not been able to correlate it's IP address
with any postings to the list, nor could i as it
appears that the list server strips out some of the Received: headers.

There is nothing i can do but block smtp from the maxnet dialup block,
but even that is not foolproof as they lots
of non-contiguous dialup netblocks.

It's very annoying, hence the plea.

Cheers, Rex

Perhaps if people used an email client not made by Bill gates then the world
would be a happier place Rex :)

It will be a happier place until the virus writers figure out that the
numbers using something other than Bill's stuff have risen to the point
where those clients are worth attacking! I still use OE because I have to
help many users via telephone calls, to repair their systems. Mozila Firefox
and Thunderbird do work well though and I have managed to convert a few
users so far with no problems and much less malware.
Now it's back to work with the weather good enough to put a few more km on
my MX5 today, roof down of course, on those lovely Marlborough Sounds roads
(and I get paid per km too!).
