Soft Top damage... where did it happen??

Post by poison » Wed Sep 08, 2004 1:17 pm

Hi

I was just wondering about the issue of soft top damage, it
seems coomon on this forum and I wondered if this is
happening in main areas in day light or just dark parking
spots at night. Can some of you tell us where this has
occurred so we can maybe reduce the odds. I'm pretty
paranoid so if in the day I wonder if it's better to park
with the roof down, as a drink poured on the seat is not as
bad as a ripped roof.

Cheers

G

My car, including the top had brake fluid poured over it in Herne Bay,
an upscale Auckland neighbourhood, on Shelley Beach Road (a main
thorough fair to/from the Harbour bridge), on a Sunday afternoon.

Bottom-line: slime ball scum can surface at any time and anywhere!

I thought one of the many good things about the MX5 was that it expelled
the myth that only rich people owned 'sports cars' and therefore
eliminated the jealousy attacks on them. Unfortunately this doesn't
appear to be the case. I wonder how brake fluid goes on the (probably
undersized) private parts of these bored/unloved/low self
esteem/unpopular little ... oops, I better stop now.

Bill, I'm really sorry to hear about this senseless and highly annoying
act on your car.

Did your insurance company pay for a respray after the
brake fluid incident, or did they play the" sorry we
dont cover malicious damage" game??

Hi Ian

Funny you should mention this, sadly I think it's part of
our Kiwi culture (I'm probably going to get dumped on for
saying this, but it's true). It never fails to amaze me the
insecurity of people that they go out of their way to put
others down. Years ago I had a yellow road legal beach buggy
and sometimes had people come up at the lights and get
abusive saying "hey *****, think you're cool". Same at bars,
I only have problems when I go with a few girls, you always
get some jealous dick head.

I was talking with zorruno on the weekend and we were talking
about this kind of thing. In many large countries such as
Japan you have many practical or artistic things outside
that will be safe from damage or vandalism. Like the UPS
courier boxes on the street in the USA, full of stationery
and packaging, no one touches it. But here in our nice clean
NZ you can't leave anything outside for 5 minutes or it gets
stolen or smashed up... makes you think...!

But at least we can be confident, "should" they get caught,
they will suffer the consequences of our tough NZ LAWs! (ie:
They "might" get told off, and asked not to do it again...
"if that's OK of course")

Hey it was last December 30th. I now have a new tan top and over 2/3 of
my car was repainted, so it looks GREAT! Of course I now have a much
higher insurance premium :-(

Of course they better tell the perpetrators "off" "gently". We wouldn't
want them to sue for hurt feelings would we???

Mmmmm...I think that paint stripper or turps on the private parts would
have a better effect.
Well the turps on dogs private parts works a wonder - it stops them coming
back and fouling the lawn...

If I was to learn who "messed up" my car, I assure you Wayne your
proposal would be viewed by them as "too kind" compared with what I
guarantee I would do to them! I AM NOT BSing

You know, there is a young american kid (and no, I am not bashing
americans...) who sprayed some cars in Singapore. They caught him. He was
prosecuted and received several strokes of a rattan cane after much protest
from his parents and other 'do gooders'. Be assured though, he won't forget
the experience and I doubt that he will be looking to repeat the experience
any time soon! Perhaps the NZ Govt should get serious about deterring crime
by punishing offenders and compensating victims rather than the other way
about.

I lived there for a few years - there's lots of less reported crimes -
immolation, murders, fraud etc. That kid was made an example of because they
couuldn't be seen to be weak with such a high profile case. BTW, a new
Corolla was around $100k when I left... tells you something about how
precious their cars are to them!!

Back to the orig. question - the soft top back window was cut on mine - Fri
nite at the bottom of Albert Park on the High St side, a couple of years
ago. Probably those street kids that hang around that hollow tree there...

I've had some people imply they thought the Mazda was a Ferrari ...?!
Still doesn't "deserve" any abuse though does it.

I'm off to Singapore on Monday and am prepared to undertake the purchase of
rattan canes if somebody would like to co-ordinate a group buy. I have to
say I have never seen any signs of vandalised cars there on any of my visits
over the past 7 years...

I will "buy 2" if we can change it to Uzi's instead of canes :)

if you are bringing back guns and ammo - i'd like a H+K 91 and as much
hydra-shok you can carry.
i have a project that will need them...

I had my roof slashed last year in a suburban street in Glendowie on a
Sunday afternoon.
The previous owner had it slashed in their driveway in Parnell.
Can be anywhere anytime...

Hey, I think I see a common factor behind all of these attacks. PARKING
IN AUCKLAND!!! The best way to avoid having your soft top slashed is
to move out of Auckland Gazza. And even if you do get your top slashed
whilst living "anywhere other than Auckland" you won't be quite as upset
because your insurance costs will be but a fraction of what you paid in
Auckland.

Are there any benefits to living in Auckland??? ;)
