What is my MX5 worth?

Post by Char Moase » Mon Aug 30, 2004 10:40 am

Hi, I'm deciding whether to take my MX5 to Australia with me - or buy
another one when I get there. Your thoughts on the value of my MX5 would be
really appreciated. It is a 1989, red, with 138,000 kms. It is in great
condition and I am the first NZ owner. Thanks in advance! Char.

Just one word of advice - prices for second hand cars in Australia are
significantly higher than they are in New Zealand. You might want to look at
some online sites to get an idea of the prices there so you can factor it
into the decision.

And there's a lot to be said for keeping your own well-maintained and known
car rather than buying a whole bunch of problems from someone else.

Thomas.

Without knowing what the price difference is, I do understand Aust prices
are much higher than NZ. I'd get a copy of the local paper where you are
heading to check asking prices. I've seen a vehicle shipper advertising in
the Classic Car mago; do you want me to look it up & advise you? And yeah I
totally agree re taking your own MX5 rather than buying someone else's
troubles. Unless you were thinking of getting a later model 1800 model.

MX5's are a bit more expensive over in Aust - however you also have the
shipping costs.

But the most important thing is to check what needs to be done for
compliance. I have a vague recollection that there is some issue with
Japanese used imports going into Aust as far as crash protection and
compliance etc. Look for a website for the Australian LTSA equivalent
for requirements - do some thorough research now and avoid heart ache
later.

Hi, I can't recommend as to the whether to take it to Oz or not sorry,
but you can do some basic research on pricing on the club site.

Go to http://www.mx5club.org.nz/forsale/ and down the bottom lets you
search through the ads, including old ones. It is not perfect, but you
can search for "89" or "red" etc and have a look at how much people have
been asking recently. It might help to give you a general idea anyway.

cheers

Hiya,
For its value in NZ, I can tell you that the last couple sold via our auction house were a red 1990 that had done 170000km's for $5000, and a red 1989 with 101200km's for $1700... the owner only expected around one third of that, so I don't think it was in good nick.

If you're in a hurry www.aacarfair.co.nz is a quick way to sell your car as I understand that the auctions will make an offer and write out a cheque on the same day.

This (http://carsguide.news.com.au/) aussie site has a 1992 for almost $13000. You might wanna check their funky little Value Your Car search that says the price range in a private sale is 9900-13000.

Good luck in Oz!

Cheers,
Kleo.

Char will you keep us updated on what you find out Re: compliance etc,

We are just entering into the discussion/interview stage regarding a
position in Aussie as well (in our case the company will pay all
household removals costs including two cars}

Thanks Jeff.

I looked at this a few years ago in respect of an NZ new Mini which I had had
for many years.

There was no real problem with that so long as I kept it for a while (2 years
comes to mind) after I arrived in Aussie, no duty, no GST.

BUT, there are some serious compliance issues with Japanese imports into
Aussie, basically the Aussies don't want a bar of them from what I can
discover. They were not at all keen on my taking my Jap import Terrano.

The Australian Customs are very helpful, it is well worth the cost of a phone
call, just be absolutely up front with them, because if it gets there and is
not "as advertised" it will rust into the dock before you see it again.

If you check these web sites it will give you an idea of the price and
availability of MX5s in Australia.

Check with the transport authority for the state you
are going to, as each state has different rules. I
remember that there was some clause about cars over 15
years being excempt from the restrictions.

You could call these guys who import jap cars into AUs
all the time and could probably give you more info
about restrictions and compliance requirements such as
seatbelts and side intrusion bars:Theyd also give you
local knowledge about MX prices.
