Headrest Speakers.

I am trying to source a set of headrest speakers to replace my OEM ones.
3.5" two way speakers are the prefered choice but I can't find a supplier in
NZ. All the well known brands don't sell their 3.5s here. I found some nice
Alpines on Ebay for $13US a pair, but they wanted $85US to send them to NZ.
I recall someone mentioning using the speakers from a computer? Has anyone
got any good ideas?

I used a pair of 4" speakers from The Warehouse. Cost $30.00 a pair. Therse
will fit in your headrests as long as you remove the original plastic
housing for the orignal speakers. They are a tight fit but you can get them
in there without cutting the foam as suggested on some sites. There is a big
increase in quality over the almost useless original ones as a bonus. Just
check the phasing of the wiring to them as well. The original wiring on many
cars is completely wrong.
There are others available from Sony, JVC etc. They might sound a bit
better, but are generally a bit deeper so you would have to cut some of the
foam from within the headrest to get them to fit. Also the tweeter on these
protrudes out the front of the speaker making them harder to fit.
Once installed, use the fader control to balance the sound levels. These new
ones will be somewhat louder than the originals.

Carl,
The website below sells stunning headrest speakers designed for MX5
headrests, but still expensive. Worth a look, though.
Just going through the same exercise myself, so look forward to other
comments.

i have two used sets (as in a pair for each seat) of sony two ways that are
excellent and fit without any mods.
i'm changing seats this week and can't use them now.

Jaycar sell some speakers which are exactly the right size...

They're fairly low power though... I blew mine up again after about 2
months driving 40w into them.

But they're something like $10 each, so can be very easily replaced.

In the US Clearwater is considered extremely over-priced and over rated.
I recall some other site that has great speakers at a much cheaper price
--sorry that's all I can offer.

I bought the wharehouse speakers for both the doors and the headrests,
the 4 inch headrest speakers needing some cutting of the foam with a
stanley Knife to fit but you can't tell when the seat cover is rezipped,

The sound is much better than I anticipated, A new single disc CD and
radio was installed {half price at cash converters} has good Bass
expander feature and fader etc and both door speaker and the headrest
speakers have no trouble giving clear crisp sound on 1/2 volume at
110kph, Instead of spending big money on a music system that got to
diverted to Grid 3,s and new kyb shocks.

I am sure that any of the car music shops could offer many setups
at various prices, instead of replacing headreat speakers maybe a sub on
the parcel tray would be a good option,it could even double as a
windblocker.
