Hi All, have just put a new set of tyres on the mx5 - now I know what Im going
to write will cause the boy racer- how fast can i get to whatever - how hard
can I corner clique on this list to mutter and splutter - mmm well...
Anyway just got rid of the silly little 185/60r14's that were on it - always
hated the look of the silly little things - tried a couple of sets and ended
up with good honest Christchurch made Firestone F900 185/70r14s (on special
for only 95 each - beat that!) on there. Yeah, I know, wrong size, far too
big, etc, for this sort of car... But to my eye the car now looks right with
well filled wheel arches, it has a much nicer ride and sits a bit higher (does
about 10-20%of its work on gravel roads so this is good). Gears it up a bit
but it still accelerates (mx5's are too low geared in my op anyway) and
corners as well as I want it to. To me my BRG is now a much better car!
(greens best anyway!!!)
Tim.

anyway. You think that that might be their downfall? Why? Have you tried
this size out on wet roads? Tim.

I dont know this tyre at all, and cannot comment on it specifically...No - havent had them out in the wet - dont use the car when its wet really
anyway. You think that that might be their downfall? Why? Have you tried
this size out on wet roads? Tim.
But its not the size of a given tyre that affects its wet weather
performance... Its the rubber compound and the tread pattern.
So, tyre model X will be good in the wet, in many if not all sizes, and if
tyre model Y is known to be a poor wet performer in size 1, then its likely
the same in sizes 2,3 and 4 as well...

Colin - as you seem to be in chch the best idea would be go and see Brent at
Firestone in Kaiapoi - he put these tyres (and a some others) on the mx5 for
me to try out with a drive up the motorway and around town before I bought
them, I'm sure he would do the same for you. Tim.

Thanks for your comments Fletch, Ive been very happy with the locally made
Firestones (comfort and wearability) that Ive had on a couple of other 4x4
vehicles but as I say am not one to push tyres and driving to the limits.
I guess sitting the car up a bit higher (with this bigger car size tyre) is
going to make it not so good under hard cornering but for me the other
advantages should outweigh that. Tim.
