Hi all
Just got my Radar Detector back from repair but it is going off all the time
now. I can mute any band I like, x, k, ka, and the various lasers. The x Band
is not used anymore but does anyone know if the k band is still used??? I have
a feeling that the k is the Hawk radar and the Ka is the Eagle radar.
Thoughts please...

Very few areas still have K band units. Te Kuiti and Thames are 2 I know of. I
think you could safely turn X permanently and K off around the major centres.

The new stalkers are on Ka as well. I agree that X band is dead now as far as
traffic radar goes. I havent come across any K's in the last 12mths.
What brand do you have and how good is it on the mobile cameras? I got given
my parents cobra they brought back from the USA and it works ok on Ka, but
with nothing to compare it to I dont know how good. Its basically useless
againts camera vans. I remember years ago i had a ?Uniden? and it used to
pick up the reflected/scattered beam of the camera as another vehicle went
past it which was great. But this on wont go off itt youve just past it or
not at all.
The vans i come across are a red one, white, and gree one that cruise the
waikato, BOP.
Cheers
Reuben.

Hi and thanks
I got the Uniden (so called top of the range) GPRS with the fixed camera GPS
data base in it. I must admit that it is cool and it can remember areas of
false alarm etc with many good features. But it's nearly useless for
mobile/parked camera's, sometimes not even a sound going towards the camera.
My previous one was also a Uniden, an old 9000 series and was significantly
better for camera's. The 5000 (I think) was much cheaper but great for cameras
but false alarmed a lot.
Given the choice again I'd be using a valentine any day of the week. Rave
reviews I've heard. Maybe next time. My friend also got one from the states, I
think it's a Bell, it even talks to you in a stupid accent which pisses you
off after a few times. He got it re-tuned for NZ (which I've read is also a
farce) and it's really crap for cameras too.
Cheers

HA ha. yeah mine has the stupid american accent to, but by the time she says
anything the cops just gone past you, Its switchable between beeps and voice,
i use beeps only. city mode block the lower half of the x-band strenght then
beeps above half. If i were going to spend money on one, definatly a
valentine/bell. Have a look at www.radar.co.nz for their reviews, havent been
there for a while but the have road tested a lot with the proper radars, and
handhead laser guns.

Most cheaper US detectors don't work well or at all on cameras. Camera freq is
slightly higher than Stalkers in the Ka band. The only US sourced detector I'd
trust here is Valentine.
