Surface rust

Post by graeme.hakin » Thu Jul 08, 2004 2:58 pm

Hi all
I've discovered a small spot of surface rust on the little, flat, round 'disc' inside the boot lid area where the rubber stopper on the boot lid touches when the boot is closed (does that make sense?). It appears that when it rains, water is sitting beneath the rubber stopper between it and the contact surface below. It looks like the water has penetrated the paint and has started to bubble up in a rust blister. I've scraped off the paint and cleared the area of surface rust, leaving just the clean metal underneath. Any ideas what's available to 'spot' treat the metal and prevent worsening. The area is very small...only a few mm across, but i want to nip it in the bud before it gets any worse, but I don't want to have to visit a bodyshop and spend a fortune on an area that's only tiny.
Any suggestions?

thanks
Graeme H

Graeme,
You can get some good rust inhibiting primer or rust
converter from your local "link up" paint suppliers.
they sell to the spraypainters etc so its good stuff.
While your there you can get them to custom mix an
aerosol can to repaint the effected area, I had a big
can made up for $22. you just have to leave your fuel
lid with them so they can match the paint up. Ive
painted my front lip spoiler, headlight lid and rear
number plate panel with the can and its a good match.

Surface rust

Hi

There is only one choice here, its a brand of rust
products called POR15 and is really "GOOD SH*T" (it even
says this on their web site ) for rust control, 1000 times
better than any zinc based primer. The website is
www.por15.co.nz and lists all the distributors in NZ, I have
bought mail order from POR15 themselves in Palmerston North,
Ph 0800 42 82 82 as it was cheaper than the trade shops who
wouldnt give me trade anyway. And whats more the guy
was very helpful about learning to use spray guns.

If you ever have any individual parts or components you want
protected in any colour you like then use something called
Procoat at www.procoat.co.nz This can even be used on
internal engine parts, weve used it so we can make steel
exhaust parts for our jet skis and they are subject to lots
of salt water.

Good Luck

There is actually a cheap alternative, its called Plasti-kote, Rust
not, Rust Converter, made in Ihio USA, you can get it from a paint store
like Guthrie Bowron, this stuff is great has a little applicater brush,
just clean rust spot area and brush on it kills rust and puts a
permanent covering over the area, i have some small spots been covered
for 5 years after initial application and have never had them get any
worse.

Cheers Jeff.
Thank you Eric.

Thanks for your advice with this one...what I've done is, I managed to get hold of a product called FerTan, which appears to be similar to the Rust converter. I've painted that on, and will wait for 24 hours before painting the area with Hammerite smooth black paint. As my car is dark met green, this will be barely noticable (invisible when the boot lid is closed)...and i'll cover the opposing side with the same to make it even.
Having cleaned the surface rust away, the area really was just tiny.
I will be considering getting a tin of body coloured paint made up, as I think I'll struggle to get my paint code off the shelf (11Q Excellent Green)...although i've yet to try a mazda parts dept. I've got a couple of stone chips that need looking at.

Cheers

Wow, we have a green house too! In fact every wall in the place is green...I'm just pleased we're renting it!
Anyway, all MX5s should be green of some shade or other...after all, it was designed as a tribute to the Lotus Elan, and Team Lotus colours are...GREEN (and yellow). And of course, as I'm British, I'd have to have BRG!! :0)
