Extractors

Post by David & Judy Kerr » Mon Apr 26, 2004 9:01 pm

Hello fellow 5vers,

Can someone please give me some advise on whether it is worth while spending
upwards of $600.00 on a set of extractors, does the increase, if any, warrant
it?

Is there any other mod's that will help the mid-range torque?

Cheers,
Dave.

Question: What have you done already?

Headers and a sports muffler should give 5 - 10 hp more and sound like a
sports car should.

Depends on who makes the extractors. There are good ones, properly designed, and there are pipes that look like extractors, but have not had any design effort put into them.

I found that extractors by themselves didn't do much
other than change the exhaust sound. But combined with
a pod filter and a nice rear muffler ... woohoo!

BTW - Genie headers at mx5mania.com.au are ~$350AUD.

I think a cheaper way might be to deburr the inside of
the stock headers as they're actually a very good
factory manifold.

Have you done the standard timing bump ?

Hello Ross,
I have put in a cold air system and advanced the timing to 14 dec so far.

Lou any recommendations on where I can go to get these at a reasonable price.
Any particular brand? I can recall a discussion on the list about a crowd in
Australia that supplies these, are they any good?

Do you know the brand name of the ones that are good?

I've heard that the Loch stewart headers are very good and there are many US
brands as well. Check miata.net forum

I have been told this about the factory headers but i didn't know. Lou has
said that if I changed it as well as fit a different muffler it will make a
differance, I am only unsure whether I would be getting good bang for my
bucks.

Thanks for that info (the intake and 14 degree timing change are good things. Make sure you are taking in cold air though - a poorly shielded intake above your extractors is not a good idea. As I have discovered from experience).

My recommendations for more low cost power are to do the following:

- work from the back with your exhaust. Get a more open muffler such as a turbo type or open if you don't mind noise, and consider a 2 and 1/4 inch bore through out.

- get rid of the catalytic converter - put a small Coby in its place rather than just pipe (sounds tinny otherwise).

- I've put in Iridium plugs and some decent ignition leads too (a small improvement, but good with the timing change).

These are all incremental low cost changes for an NA car but extractors should probably come after this since there is not so much benefit to be gained from them if the rest of your exhaust is restrictive.

Good luck - the above have made my '92 much more fun to drive!

Ross

Colin on the list here can vouch for the products from Loch Stewart, if they are still available. Made a measurable difference to his 1.8. On the other hand the extractors he had previously from McLennan's here in Wellington were likely causing a LOSS of performance.

I spoke with Mr Stewart at length last year about his cold air induction system and extractors. Based on his past experience he would not sell me extractors without viewing the car that they were to be fitted to. However, I now have one of his cold-air boxes installed to my 1.6. I drove a friend's 1.6 BRG model recently and for what it is worth, I think mine is bit more nimble. Hard to quantify really but if anyone in Auckland is considering investing in the kit, you are welcome to have a go with mine.

Yes. Its very true the Loch Stewart gear is excellent.
I have the intake and the full exhaust system. Driveability is greatly
improved with a (if I remember correctly Gary) 20% odd increase in
torque and an improvement in power to a dynoed (dynapak) 152 bhp. I
have 14 degree timing and racing beat leads. That's all the secrets
out. Those things and an unbending right ankle seem to serve ok.
The torque retains its wide spread and so part throttle balancing is
smoother. Quite satisfying really.
and it sounds fantastic. even bouncing off a motorway median barrier
it sounds good. Not loud just sexy.
I have had it for 30 thousand k's now and its all still as new.
Cheers

Thanks Ross. Most of what you have suggested I have done, I forgot about
telling you that I had the cat taken out, except the sports muffler which I
will now check out.
Someone on the list was selling a sport muffler not so long ago and did offer
it to me, if you are still out there and it is still for sale can you please
contact me.

Dave.
