I now realise why I have heard nothing about my application to join the MX5
club. I sent my money and the PDF form from the MX5 club web page and I ticked
the Canterbury branch thinking i was joining the canterbury branch.

NOPE... apparently the NZ Club just sucked in the brass and after about a month
have not shown the courtesy even acknowledging my application.

I am now joining the Canterbury branch (which is not affiliated with the NZ
Branch apparently even though it appears often on the NZ web page) and will be
sending some more money to do so.

Can someone provide me with a reason for belonging to the NZ Club ?

Why doesn't the Cant Branch become affiliated ?

Hi Colin.

Sorry to hear of your problems with the lack of info regarding the Canty
Club being separate from the NZ Club.

When we lived in Chch we were members of the NZ MX5 Club, as well as the
Christchurch Club, so I can shed some light on the situation.

Quite some years ago (more than 6) the Chch Club was affiliated with the NZ
Club. The clubs were not as organised as they are today, so there were
problems with communication between the two groups, and transfer of monies,
etc were not done well. Just from reading the correspondence history, it
seemed that the Chch Club became disillusioned with the "Head Office" and
decided to go it alone. After this the Chch Club almost sank, as interest
was low. A couple of years later it got some good leadership and made a
comeback - as a separate entity to the NZ Club. We became involved soon
after this.
Since then it has had it's own membership fee, monthly newsletter, a little
merchandising, monthly meetings, discounts from retailers, as well as the
all important monthly drives and occasional social events.
Whilst we were still involved with the Chch club there was an approach made
by the NZ Club to try to get the Chch Club affiliated with the NZ Club, so I
bought this up at the monthly meeting. The feedback I received was
NO!!! As well as the "Anti-Auckland" feeling which is alive and well
down south, the members could not see why they should pay a higher
membership fee and have someone from out of town running the club, when it
was ticking along fine as it was. As I recall, the benefits to them of
being affiliated were: A bigger, better newsletter; A wider range of
merchandise to buy; Better protection for club committee members if damage
was done by a club member at a club event; Easier to use the racetrack at
Ruapuna (I think) - currently we went along with the BMW Club, which worked
quite well. So really, it wasn't worth it for them.
The NZ MX5 Club kindly made space for the Chch Club on their website, and we
always intended to construct a page to put on there, but never found the
time. We used to also advertise the up-coming Chch events on the web-site,
but the new secretary is not very computer literate, and has not been doing
this (it's a wee bit tricky). We were also welcome to submit articles to
the TopDown Magazine, but that's another thing that hasn't happened as yet.
So that's how it stands. We were members of both clubs whilst living in
Christchurch, and it suited us fine, but most members only belong to the
local club.

As to your receiving nothing with regards to your membership application,
you should have received your membership card, (and maybe the latest TopDown
newsletter?) so if nothing's come - you should probably chase it up.

With regards to putting on the NZ Club Webpage that the Chch Club is not
affiliated and has a separate membership fee - I can't see that happening,
as the NZ Club, which pays for the page with no help from Chch - would then
miss out on membership income! It's a tricky situation, alright, but I
can't see an easy way out of it - sorry.

At the end of the day - enjoy the car!!??

Regards
Kate (& Michael) Cooper

Hi Colin
These things happen , especially round Xmas. The club's run by volunteers after all! I did the Koni shock thing with the last buy and found members to be very helpful in guiding me through the job even tho' I'm in Invercargill and the main body of members is in the north. They have also been very suportive of our small but growing group down here even though not all are club members.
As for the seperate organisation in ChCh? Well, only having monocular vision Cantabrians have to stick close together for mutual protection I guess!
BTW. How many Michael and Kate Coopers are there in MX5's? I don't recognise the e-mail address.

Just curious as I recently sent in my forms and money etc to rejoin after an
extended period overseas and I got my membership pack within a couple of
weeks.

Did you send an email or call anyone from the contacts page of the club
website asking what was happening with your application?

As a complete aside, you don't happen to work in IT do you?

Mike.
