Hi all, OK this is may not be quite the last post (you might want to
finish up the recent discussions), but nearly so.

I set this list up in 1999 with the intention that it be a reasonably
unmoderated list, that anyone could post to. During this time we have
had unwanted Spam emails, a couple of virus emails and a lot of junk
posted - most of which went away when we only accepted posts from
subscribed members.

It has been pretty difficult to manage however, and really not helped by
the few people recently who had high opinions about what they wanted
from the list - forgetting about the fact that other people (i.e. the
majority) wanted the list to be about MX5s, and I have a life outside of
this list. Also, not helped at all by the few members who abused me for
supposed filtering of their posts, coming up with what I thought was a
relatively diplomatic method of toning down the rubbish, or stated that
having this list was somehow their birthright (NZ Clubmember or not) and
that they paid money to keep it going.

The mission statement for the list was always that it was unmoderated,
nothing to do with the MX5 Club (except for the small cost of hosting
fees), and open to all. This seemed to be lost over the last few months
and I know a number of nice people, with a lot of useful MX5 knowledge
have unsubscribed recently for this very reason.

The software I setup to manage the list is a bit archaic also, which
means that I was doing a lot to keep it going, and the whole thing was
taking up too much of my time and sanity.

Aaannnnyway... long story short... the NZ MX5 Committee in the last
meeting (actually the April Mtg) voted to terminate this list. Their
take is that they want to concentrate on running an MX5 club, not filter
angry requests from members about the behaviour of people (non-members
or members) on an email discussion list. Also, as I stated, I don't
want to admin this list anymore, and no one else volunteered.

Soooo... I abstained from the vote, but do pretty much agree with their
reasoning.

This list will be shut down over the next few days.

Hooowwwweverrr... there is a cunning alternative plan which has now been
implemented by myself and a few helpers (thanks specifically to Rex,
Chic, Karl and others) I'm sure most (but I guarantee not everyone!)
will agree that the solution we have set up is a good plan for the future.

ANNOUNCING:
The NZ MX5 Forum at http://www.mx5forum.co.nz/

All the 'GET A FORUM' people should now be happy, and even better, the
people who like email are catered for too, as there is a fully
integrated mail to forum feature which means you can use it just like an
email list as we have been here.

So feel free to pop over, register yourself a username, read all the
rules, Announcements, FAQs etc and enjoy talking about MX5s again.
Maybe too if you know people who unsubscribed from this list recently,
spread the word.

And hey if you want to chat, this is even catered for too with an
off-topic chat forum/list.

Cheers & see you at the NZ MX5 Forum

Heya,

Everytime I have needed information about the mx5, this list has been my
first port of call. I have allways been able to get fantastic information
which has saved me alot of time and money. The few people who have ruined
this for the majority of us should feel ashamed in doing so.

I will be sad to see the list go. I hope the new list is as good as this one

Thanks

I think we ALL owe a huge vote of thanks to zorruno for all of the time he
has given to this list.

A question, are the old post archives being kept, and will they still be
viewable as they are at present? There is a lot of information in them that
I would hate to see thrown away. (I've seen the effects before, at work!!)

Kevin

Excellent, signed up thanks.

Umm, is there any consideration to the idea of importing the current
email list archive into the forum?

There is some good content in the list, it'd be good if some of that
was in the forum so that some of the already asked questions can be
searched.

Well said Clive, Graham and Kevin - a huge vote of thanks to zorruno for all
the work he has put in on what turned out to be a pretty thankless task. I
have not been able to attend many MX5 Club events but the arrival of the
list emails - whether on topic or not - often brightened a dull day. I felt
part of the wider community and I learned a lot. Going to a chat area will
not be the same.

I am only sorry that the actions of one person - as so often happens in
life - have spoiled it for so many. I trust he is now satisfied.

Thanks for all the work over the years. Thanks also to those who have worked
on, and will moderate, the forum.
I have set up to receive the posts via email so will be interesting to see
how it works out. Had to modify my email rules to sort the posts but no
problem.
Now to see if this post appears!

Hi zorruno

Though I haven't been on the MX5 List that long, still wish to say many
thanks to you for all your work. The new forum is just the ticket and
brings everything right up to date - and thanks to the new forum moderators
for their work to set it all up.

The chat facility and the facility to receive posts by email are excellent
ideas.

Cheers & all the best!

I wholeheartedly agree... Being a webmaster of a number of voluntary
sites, I know from experience that you rarely get any thanks for the
hours you put in. Good show zorruno and I hope the new forum works
out well. Just wish there were some more colour schemes! :-)

As a "junior" member of the mail list may I add my thanks to
those who have run it.

And I will add my hopes also that all the valuable
information contained here is retained for further use.

If there is a problem hosting the information, I run a web
server and would be more than happy to help.

See you at the forum (sounds vaugely Roman!)

I agree, it is a shame that people who try to be public spirited and help
clubs/organizations are the ones who get abused.

Being a new member I have not had the opportunity to participate in club
events etc or to meet members but I have enjoyed the majority of
correspondence that has come through the list and in some cases tips that I
have collected have been very useful.

I do not know you zorruno but as a new member thanks for all the work that I
have seen and by reading all the work before I came along.

Regards

Keith

Hi All,
Many thanks to zorruno and all those how have helped get Betsy up and running.
I am sure we would have been very disappointed with our purchase had it
not been for all the advice I have received from you all that enabled me
to fix leaks, lights and air filter etc!
Cheers

Hi John,

Thanks for the info on adjusting the window rubbers to reduce leaks, I have played around with mine over the weekend and am hoping it will have corrected the problem (however I am not looking for rain just to test it out :O). You were right, once I figured out which screws you were refering to, the whole job took about 15 minutes to do both sides.

Thanks again, really helpful!

I too am deeply sorry that the List is going, I have derived much
enjoyment and a lot of information from it. It has been a great tool to
cement the Club together and I hope that the forum which replaces it
will be at least half as good.

zorruno, you have done a fantastic job in maintaining an open,
unrestricted and interesting list, in sometimes trying circumstances.
The club and the list members owe you a considerable debt of gratitude.

To the people of the list who have contributed to this lively community
and given me the help and enjoyment I have had from it, thanks, and keep
the TOP DOWN

Eric

Thank you zorruno, for all the work you have done for this list and the
website over the years. I'm sure that everyone will agree you have run a
first class product and put in a massive effort (sometimes thankless).
Again, thanks for all your input.

Yes zorruno you have done a great job and I know the majority of MX5 List
members really appreciate the time and effort you have put in.

Take a bow and put your feet up... you've earned it!

I have yet to take a look at the forum but hope the integrated mail feature
works for me :-)

Thanks zorruno
I've nearly always found the list really helpful, never been disappointed by
the responses I've had to my queries. just the odd fly in the ointment
(which can be ignored), but that's life no matter where you go. zorruno
you've done a great job and enjoy you new found time & freedom.

Cheers Simon Senior.
