Cold running

Post by kiwipete » Thu May 18, 2006 9:30 am

My 89 mx5 starts fine and runs for a minute and dies... When restarting it takes a while and has the symptoms of beingb flooded like having to use full throttle to start. Runs sweet when warmed up. Any ideas?

I'll offer the paranoid option...

This reminds me of what my car was like when it started showing signs of
the crank-nose problem. It would start without any problem at all, then
when I first eased off the throttle (at the first intersection) it would
die and then not want to start at all.

Shortly after it started doing that, it also started being noticeably
gutless when cold (I was living at a place with a steep driveway - with
cold engine I had to rev it mightily to get up the driveway).

There are some links about the problem here:
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/faq/mx5/#W1

BTW: the loctite-fix on my car (done September 04) seems to have been
completely successful.

Karl.

Yep - mine only did it when dead cold. The other symptom is reduced
power, but since the impact was gradual over a number of months, I
didn't notice the change.

It is easy to figure out if your car has potential for the problem (it
only occurred on early MX5s) - this article tells you what to look
for:
http://www.miata.net/garage/crankshaft.html

There is a place in Auckland which can weld up the crank-nose and
machine a new keyway in it, instead of the loctite fix. It's a tradeoff
of money vs skill/time. (I didn't have the skills or the money, but I
did have a friend with the skills :-)

We confirmed the problem in my car by testing the TopDeadCentre position
of the engine (by putting the dipstick through the sparkplug hole in
cylinder #1) against the position of the TDC mark on the pulley - they
didn't line up anymore. Then we found that the bolt was loose
anyway (it was only finger-tight) - a pretty definite confirmation of
problems.

You may well not have the crank-nose problem, but it is something to
consider.
