Roof Stitching

Post by simple » Tue May 09, 2006 9:36 am

I've been meaning to post some info for a while, but didn't quite get to
it until now...

On Wed, Mar 29, 2006 at 08:22:31PM +1200, Eric & Ann West wrote:
PURLEE should be back on the road by the weekend, I have been very jealous seeing all of the MX5s going past in the last four weeks. She now has a new roof, which was obtained from Mazda (a genuine Robbins) for $750 inc GST on special and required fitting.
I went down to North Harbour Mazda a few days after Eric wrote that. I
asked nicely, flashed my club membership card, and enquired about a
current special deal. This is the quote they gave me:

NA01 R1210 M FABRIC, TOP-SOFT $789.48
NAY1 R1240 G WINDOW BACKSOFT TOP $289.47

(those prices include GST, and the window is plastic)

Add these prices together and you get $1213 for a new roof/window.

I asked if this included the MX5club discount - the man pointed at the
"Unit List" column, which showed prices about 10% higher. I asked about
the "special" I had heard of - he shrugged.

I did not take them up on this deal. In my experience, North Harbour
Mazda have never given me any sort of deal that was worth having. I
presume one needs to be in the trade before they will admit to having
any sort of special.

Eric also said:
I think Paul will bear me out that it should take no more than about 3-4 hours, say $200 in labour, that seems to have been the going rate, so at the "special price" you should be able to swap the lid for under a grand at the moment
Just before talking to the 'helpful' people at Mazda, I stopped in at
All Care Upholstery to see what they would charge for fitting the roof
if I supplied it - they gave me a rough quote of $400+GST (or more if it
turned out to be a difficult brand to fit).

I've not yet had the roof replaced (no fiscal allocation), but I will be
getting more quotes before I do - I am not inspired by the quotes I have
been given thus far!

Give my mate Dennis a call at Hibiscus Coast Panelbeaters,0-9-424 8258
and mention my name. I thought he got mine from NH Mazda, but maybe not.
He could probably get you one at the price he got mine and point you at
the guy who fitted mine. It took the upholsterer a while, but he did a
good job, and now he has had recent experience he should be quicker!

I purchased mine off this seller. Excellent roof (original Robbins, with
the zip out window). Cost me $700 + shipping (or there abouts). A local
trimmer fitted it for me for $250.00 and said that it went on no
trouble. I would recommend this guy without any worries at all.

On his auction he says the fitting instructions are included. Is it a job
that can be done without any special tools or skills.
Have any of you guys done it yourself.

Yes the instructions are there - no "I" would not attempt it. I did
contemplate it, but I think unless you have been shown how to do it by
someone experienced you could end up in a world of hurt :-)

Hi people;A couple of points;Robins tops are not factory Mazda
originals. They are a US made product. Also when you buy a genuine Mazda roof
it comes with the rear window for the price stated below in Karls letter. We
can supply genuine Mazda roofs fitted for $1000 + gst.Ross.

It's just that your depressed South Island economy won't stand any more!
And we spend too much time doing important things, like sitting in
traffic, to be good at rugby.

Yep and Auckland produces 11.258% of GDP and spends 48.7%, is it any wonder ;)
And we still have to pay for those you spend all your time "sitting" on :(

You need to pay for a few more of them I think Biff, while my tongue was
firmly in my cheek, it did take me two hours to travel the 40 Km from my
home to the central city this morning, it is no wonder that we produce
less and spend more. But that's a different topic

Hi Eric,
Heck, two hours to go 40Km, is this normal or a one off? If its normal that
aint good!
No offence meant in my reply either, I like taking shots at Aucklanders, I
lived in Green Bay for a number of years before returning to ChCh, I use to
ride my Honda 750 to work, and see all the cars stacked up trying to get
into town as I passed them, then they had to find somewhere to park. The
only time I didn't feel so smug was it the rain :)

Today was a bit heavier than usual, but 1.5 hours is not unusual, (my
record is 4hrs 33 minutes, but they had virtually closed the motorway
due to an accident.

The thing that really cheesed me off today was that although I left home
a bit early, it took so long to get to the city that I missed out on the
"early-bird" parking, so it cost me $28 to park for the day, instead of
$12.

The reason we spend 48% of GDP is that the cost of doing anything in
this city is so high, and then they want to add a couple of tolls to the
cost of going to work, oh yes, don't forget a $10 per day extra tax on
car parks.

What we need is some serious air pollution, caused by the smoke of
"Greens" being burnt at the stake!

I don't think I want to move to Auckland. I live about 6.5km away from
work. Takes me about 20-25min by bike (depending on the wind), about
12min by Vectra, and about 15-20min by MX-5 (I take the long way home
:-) ).
