1600 or 1800

Post by Alz » Sat May 06, 2006 5:26 pm

How can you tell if the engine is a 1600 or an 1800?
Is there anything different in the configuration of the components or is just
by engine no. etc.

Thanks,

Al

The easiest way with out getting into the different sparks lead set up and
airfilter setup, is to look on the fire wall at the chassis number NA6 for
1600 and NA8 for 1800 for series I and NB6 and NB8 for series II.

The 1600 engine has the coilpacks on the exhaust side of the engine at the
rear, the 1800 engine has the coilpacks on the inlet side of the engine at
the rear, or on top of the plugs.

Can you not also tell by the difference in camsahaft covers? The 1600 has the
recessed logo 'Mazda' 'DOHC 16 valve' and the 1800 has the raised logo
'Mazda' 'DOHC 16 valve' . A sure way to tell if there has been an engine swap
surely, or the NB has been imported with the 1600 engine option?

I thought that also Dez, but I've seen quite a few 1800's with depressed
logos. I'm confused??

Photos of both can be seen on this thread:

This is THE BEST way to tell.

"The 1600 engine has the coilpacks on the exhaust side of the engine at the
rear, the 1800 engine has the coilpacks on the inlet side of the engine at
the rear, or on top of the plugs."

Regarding cam covers ..

The NA (popup headlights) 1.6 has recessed lettering
The NA (popup headlight)1.8 has raised lettering

The NB (fixed headlight pre 2005) has recessed lettering on the 1.8
The NB (fixed headlight pre 2005) was also available in a "povo pack" 1.6lt
version, but I don't know what the lettering looks like on those.

The Air Flow Meters also look different.

The 1.6 one is big and metallic.

The 1.8 one is only a bit larger than the width of the intake runner and is
black plastic.

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.
