Adjusting the roof

Post by skams » Wed Apr 26, 2006 3:05 pm

Eric,
Having just replaced the top on my 5 myself, ably assisted by one D J Cross
Esq., the only adjustment that I am aware of is that for the latches. Mr.
Granger tells us that when adjusted correctly the gap between the top (both
soft and hard) and the windscreen header should be 5 mm + or - 2 mm and the
miss - alignment should be 0 + or - 2 mm, to achieve this adjustment proceed
as amply described by John.
the attachment for the soft top around the rear does have slotted holes (all
except the centre hole) but the slotting goes side ways and does nothing to
alleviate the tension that you are experiencing with you top, incidentally
mine took the effort of both dez and myself to engage the latches for the
first time and when released about an hour later, the top had stretched
considerably although was still very tight. I'm hoping that it will have
stretched even further when I get to take it down for the fist time as I only
completed the job Easter Friday

Cheers Simon Senior in wet dry wet Renwick near Blenhiem.

Adjusting the roof

Post by 41south » Wed Apr 26, 2006 3:29 pm

My new top has been on for about 2 weeks now. initially I had to stand
outside, grab one of the roof cross bars with one hand and pull like
heck with the other one to get the latches engaged. Its is now
thankfully much better.

Cheers
Colin.

Eric,
I have just had a new roof fitted also. The fitter specifically said
that the roof needed to be kept closed for the first week and then
opened and closed in both cold and hot temperatures so it would
'stretch' and fit easier. I noticed that now some three weeks on it is
nice and snug and nowhere near as tight as it first was when first
fitted so methinks they fit it 'tight purposely. Yes and our clips are
also tight.especially the left one so I always fix the right hand side
first and then the left one connect easier. I see you have several
replies re adjustment anyway - but your not alone on the issue of new
tops being 'a bit testy to start with'.
