Insurance cost (was "more on car immobiliser...")

Post by ianbell » Tue Apr 25, 2006 3:38 pm

Hi
I am insured with NZI and the cost is $414 pa with excess of $300, or $900
for any male driver under 25 and $700 for any female driver under 25.
Although I do have an alarm, this should not make too much difference. I
know that at Tower Insurance the MX5 is not on the "hot list" of commonly
stolen cars, so an alarm is not compulsory.

We're NZI through a broker. We took a larger excess ($1000) which gives
a lower premium of $253.76. This may seem low, but it's a '90 NZ car
insured for only $5000. Under 25s can't drive the car at all. We're
over 50 (well over!). Our theory is we pay for self-inflicted minor
damage, insuring only for a major event. We can still claim if another
driver causes a crash. The excess does NOT apply if the car is stolen
as it has an approved immobiliser, which activates automatically 30
seconds after the ignition key is removed.
We live in South Auckland so have had one car stolen and have been
burgled three times - about par for the course! NZI have been very good
to deal with.
