Ignition keyhole light mod

Post by Dez » Wed Apr 19, 2006 10:46 pm

Has anyone on the list made up & installed an ignition keyhole light as
described in the Miata.net/garage? I hope to do so shortly but before I do, I
need to confirm that the wiring in our Eunos is colour coded the same as
described in the article.
I am not in any way trained or skilled in the black arts of electronics or
electrickery, (sorry Grant :) ) so I will be blindly following the procedure
as detailed. Naturally, I have a hesitation to start blowing fuses or leds
unnecessarily.
Any tips, anyone?

I assume you mean this article:

Find a tame electronics person. Whilst the project is reasonably
straightforward, if you do mess up something with your ignition wiring
then you may find your car undriveable at some inconvenient later time
(it will be probably cold/raining, and far from home). This is merely
my opinion. :-)

Ignition keyhole light mod

Post by KSCRIM » Thu Apr 20, 2006 9:09 am

Dez, I've done the keyhole light mod and it works fairly well. I couldn't
read the circuit diagram in the article so I invented my own for the
electronics. For the off signal I used the switched +12v feed to the radio,
(accessories). I have an interior light delay fitted which caused some grief
with the alarm trigger circuit, but found a way around that also. (Diode
needed in the interior light wiring to discriminate between the delay earth
and the door switch earths),
The steering wheel hub obscures the keyhole so the effect is not quite as
good as in some other makes of car. However it is a worthwhile mod to do. It
is just one of several small mods I've done, I had to do some minor tracking
through the wiring though as I have a JDM 98NB and the only wiring diagrams
I can find are the US version from www.Madracki.com/miata/ What year is
yours?. I'm in Auckland (Massey) and could assist if that helps?? I'm also
away for the next 12 days, but will check in this evening.

Kevin

Our MX3/Eunos-Presso-v6 had a factory illuminated keyhole ... might be
an easier option.

Ignition keyhole light mod

Dez, I'm on holiday in Tairua on the Coromandel Peninsular at present but
return home on the evening of the 24th. Five of us so travelling in the
Honda Odyssey...pity as great MX5 roads around here! Give me a call on
the 25th if you like and perhaps I can call round to see how the mod is
going.
Travelling back to Auckland on Friday morning and then home on Sunday /
Monday. Hope to find some internet access to send this while in Auckland.
Leaving on Sunday about mid day otherwise would have called at the New Lyn
Burger King to say gidday to Peter and others.

Grant temporarily in sunny Tairua.
