List Administration: MX5 Discussion List Treasure Island

Post by Mazda MX5 Club of NZ E... » Thu Apr 06, 2006 9:17 pm

(apologies for the repost to those who received this twice...)

Hi, as I maintain this list I have decided to introduce a new list feature.

People often ask me to 'Ban' other people from this list, and I don't
feel it is my duty to decide who should be banned. I have not banned,
moderated or restricted the posting of anyone thus far since I set this
list up in 1999 except for reasons of a technical nature (mail loops,
and problems with 'Out of office' messages)

However we are a community, and so I believe democracy should prevail.

This list has always been open to anyone with an interest in MX5s and
the discussion thereof, including whether or not they are a financial
member of the Mazda MX5 Club of New Zealand inc (who pay for this list
hosting).

People should loosely stick to the tips listed at:
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nzmx5list/tips/
and generally conduct themselves in a civilised manor.

If you as a list member think that someone is not doing the above, you
are welcome to request that they be 'banned' or restricted from posting.

To do so:
1. Send an email to e-admin@mx5club.org.nz
2. State the email address of the person you wish to be 'banned'
3. No reason for requesting the ban need be given.
4. If you an MX5 Club of NZ Financial Member for the current year
(2005-06) you get 2 votes. State your MRN, and full name.
5. If you are not a financial member, you get one vote.
6. 40 votes for one email address and a restriction will be implemented.
7. Vote count must be over a period of 1 month.

Furthermore:
1. No correspondence, or discussions will be further entered into.
2. A restricted person will not be contacted or told of their
restriction, and neither will on list discussions of voting be entertained.
3. No requests for 'details of people who have voted' will be
entertained except by members of the MX5 Club of NZ Committee, to make
this a fair, auditable process.

If you don't like this new feature then you have 3 options:
1. Unsubscribe. You can do that here:
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nzmx5list/
2. Set up your own MX5 discussion List.
3. Complain to the committee of the organisation that pays for this list
hosting - contact details here: http://www.mx5club.org.nz/committee/

You may vote any time from now. I'll be adding this text to the list
information details on the website at some stage in the future.

List Administration: MX5 Discussion List Treasure Island

I have to say that, whilst discussion on this topic is apparently not
welcome, this idea disturbs me greatly.

I have always attempted to take a moderate and middle ground with
respect to
the list, a position which I believe has been respected .

With the greatest of respect zorruno, I find your reference to
"democracy" in
this posting somewhat offensive, because what you suggest is as far from
that as one can be.

It is totally abhorrent to my sense of justice and fair play that anyone is
in a position to be judged in secret and having been judged, to not be
permitted a hearing or the ability to offer a defence, nor to be advised
that a penalty has been imposed.

One of the great tenents of democracy is the right to freedom of speech.
Whilst this may, from time to time, mean we hear things that we do not wish
to hear, it ensures we are able to hear the things we need to hear.

It seems to me that this measure is aimed at just one of our number. There
are many times, indeed the majority of times, when I disagree with what this
member has to say. There are times when I find what is said, to be totally
repellent. Never the less, I will defend, if necessary at the cost of my
place on this list, his right to say it in what has always been an
unrestricted forum.

I would urge all list members, who value this list as a democratic,
unrestricted forum, on MX5 matters, to conduct themselves in a moderate
manner, respecting the right of all members to enjoy the postings on the
list.

I would urge you zorruno to reconsider this idea.

If you do not feel able to do so, I request that you unsubscribe me from the
list. I would not want to be part of it.

I would request that, prior to unsubscribing me, you publicly advise the
list of your intention to do so.

Regards

Eric
