Radar Detectors

If one was to purchase, for a friend, a Radar Detector, which brand/model is
best for NZ? Anybody out there with experience that can recommend one.

no experience myself but the Valentine One model has been king of the
hill for some years now (google for 'net reviews). Pricey tho.

It's really good for mobile radar but virtually useless for
speed cameras. The GPS advantage is that it has most of the
pole mounted cameras in it's database, also you can add
"speed Traps" and any other location into it's memory, it
has less false alarms due to the GPS memory. Cost is about
$500.00 oh and not so great for laser, but no other radar
will be either.

I (sorry..I mean my friend) would not buy a Bell as he has
two other friends with these that don't even bother to keep
them in the car anymore. I agree with Jeff, the valentine
has the best reviews, or maybe that's marketing, who knows.
And don't get one that talks to you like some of the Bell
one's as the computerised dumb ass American voice drives
most people crazy.

The V1 is excellent as a radar detector, however is a real pain to own.

We had one for less than a month and forgot to take it out one day, 30 mins
later a brick had gone through the passangers window and it was stolen. 3
pm busy street, with people about. Car drove up passenger walked back, did
the smash and grap, jumped into the car, good bye to $800.

One month later 9pm at home with the lights on watching TV, the car with the
v1 was two cars up the drive way, 5ft high fences, big gates, they did the
same on the drivers side, car alam went off, raced outside to see a guy
sprint out the gate and dive into a car with no lights on, good bye to
another v1.

Given that in both cases it cost to fix the car, and not just the windows we
would never be seen with a V1 again. People I know have had the window
done, glove box opened etc, looking to see if they had left their V1 in the
car. Being seen with a v1 is not a good thing.

So owning a v1 is a problem, if you need a detector get a fitted and hidden
one (so not a v1).

Mike

Hey Wayne,

If your friend is that way inclined, the Val 1 is the way to go. However, if
your friend too drives a MX5, some info from another 'friend' tells me that
the laser has a hard time picking up on those as the only good reflective
surface on them is the number plate the MX5 being so flat and areodynamic...
;)

Just for the record I don't have one and have never had a ticket ;) and I
don't drive like "Granny May" Nor like that of a "Sunday driver" ;)

Radar Detectors

Basically, they are a waste of good money.

They will detect most radar based speed guns, such as the Hawk, but Laser is
virtually undetectable until it has hit you, and then it is far too late.

The Hawk is now used in standby mode most of the time, so emits no radiation
until the operator decides to lock a target. Even if mobile, all it emits is
a low powered ground pluse, to measure its own speed, and this you would be
lucky to detect as it is in milliwatts. It only emits detectable signal once
the main beam is powered on, again too late. If they are stationary they
emit nothing

Hawks are pretty well on the way out, I am told, (in fact I was discussing
it with my ex-Traffic Sergeant, now a Police Inspector, tonight) that all
the new gear is Laser based.

Unless you do a lot of travel away from home, you will probably be aware of
most of the Camera sites in your area anyway. There is not much you can do
with vehicle mounted Laser.

I don' t want to sound "preachy" or holier than thou, but you can afford a
lot of "11 km over tickets" for the price of a good detector, and if you get
pinged much above that, you have only yourself to blame.

As an aside, which probably applies far less now than it did, as few
warnings are issued these days, when I was issuing speeding tickets, it was
an unwritten policy that vehicles speeding, and fitted with detectors, were
never warned. They always got a "live" ticket.

Radar Detectors

Greetings,

New to the list, so Im assuming you used to do Police work Eric?

Ive personally never seen another MX5 pulled over, compared to the
countless skylines, silvias, familias, evos, vr4's etc

My car isnt exactly the quietest (nor the cleanest, could do with a good
wash right about now) but Ive never had any issues with this car being
pulled over for speeding. I HAVE however been pulled over when the
silencer was in (on two occasions) only to be checked for everything
from a breath test, liscence, rego, warrant, volume etc.
Lately Ive been driving with the silencer out.

I must confess, I HAVE broken the 59kmph mark on more than one occasion,
but I do so at my own risk knowing that I could get pulled over and done
for it.

A Radar detector does NOT gaurantee you wont get a speeding ticket, so
personally I would rather not actually bother with one. I know a few
people who used to pop cars, and they would look for the suction cup
marks on your windscreen to tell if you've gone and stashed a radar
detector in your glovebox. Not worth forking out the $300+ for to have
your car broken into IMHO.

Sure, if you check the DSE Website, they say the NZ Police are behind
them because they make drivers safer, but personally I would rather take
my chances than fork out for something like that. You're better off
training yourself to stick to the speed limit IMHO.

Of course, when all this is said and done, I dont drink my own medicine
and do sometimes break the speed limit and I dont have a radar ;-)

Regards

Joe

So do I unfortunately. Cost me $80.00 for 112km/h in a 100km/h zone when
pulling in after passing a truck. First ticket of any sort in more than 30
years.
