Petrol Tax Letter Was: Why Global warming is a croc.

Post by MadMaz » Thu Mar 30, 2006 11:38 pm

Re your last post Bill. Is that so?

Funny isn't it, how the now ex-Minister of Transport abandoned all his
ministerial posts so easily when he could have weathered, what appeared
in public, to be little more than a storm in a teacup.

Our petrol tax letter added to the rapidly growing number of other
protestations that made Parker's seat too hot to sit in any longer - so he
willingly got out it when given the opportunity - much to the consternation
of the Prime Minister, who is still attempting to have him back.

Many other people, like me, were applying relentless pressure to his office
for answers. Our letter was not the only petition.

Now, 30 other people on the List plus myself actually got up and did
something. The Minister's resignation I view with great satisfaction.

Oh pleeeeeease, don't insult this list's intelligence Mark!

If you believe your letter contributed in even the slightest way to
Parker's resignation you sir are the quintessential 'Bambi'! No need for
you to smoke weed mate, you're already in never-never land.

May suggest you re-read my response. I never said your effort wasn't
warranted, however your strategy and its method of implementation was
"misguided, poorly planned": in other words totally flawed!

May I suggest you start by reading the biographies of some politicians:
B. Clinton and D. Lange, are recent ones that come to mind. Perhaps you
can find a correspondence course (because you won't find a non-PC
lecturer down here) that could assist in educating you on the 'art and
science' of how to initiate and gain political influence.

Mark
I'm not sure that you have an appreciation of the process for handling
Ministerial correspondence.
Let me explain. A letter received in a minister's office will be read by one
of his staff. It will then be directed to the appropriate Government
department (in this case MoT) to draft a response. In the case of diverting
petrol tax monies from roading to other areas of Govt. expenditure the
answer is likely to be a standard reply tailored to pick up any particular
points made by the writer. The response will be vetted by staff in the
Minister's office and cleared for signing. The Minister may scan the letter
before signing.
Its important that people write to Ministers about matters of concern.
However, it is wistful thinking to assume letters have any tangible impact
on Ministers decisions to resign their portfolios. The answer you received
to your letter would likely be the same irrespective of the Minister.

I was one of the list that added my name to the letter. Why? Because
its better than sitting on my butt and complaining and doing nothing.

If enough people write enough letters and make enough noise - then
things can (and sometimes do) change.

Now I don't believe for one second that this contributed to the
resignation, but I also don't think it was useless. At the very least -
I believe that unless you do 'something' you have no right to sit back
and complain.

Bill, I would suggest that you re-read you own emails - the reason you
email was blocked was more than likely that you were using inappropriate
phrases in it - again - not because of political content. Just because
you do not like what someone is saying there is no reason to insult
them.

It would be far easier to make a constructive, sober argument - this is
what facilitates discussions. Also suggesting that you wont find a
non-PC lecturer "down here" I am assuming that this is good 'OL NZ
bashing again - this also does not help.

Let's keep the list civil and friendly. People can agree to disagree,
and constructive arguments are good.

Can I suggest that we drop the Political threads and get back to good
old fashion MX5 emails?

Petrol Tax Letter Was: Why Global warming is a croc.

Post by MadMaz » Fri Mar 31, 2006 12:28 pm

Bill

I've read Chris' message this morning and he's right about political
postings on the List - so this is the last one from me.

Just to reply, I've written many letters to ministers over the years,
utilising exactly the same format as I did with the Petrol Tax Letter -
by e-mail with the names of supporters in addition.

This approach has worked very well, with a very satisfactory response in
80% of the cases, usually inside of 21 days.

The very best response was from Pete Hodgson, who took a great deal of
time to write a very lengthy and satisfactory reply, totalling 3 pages,
addressing point by point my concerns as listed, on the subject of
insufficient fuel holding stocks in New Zealand.

I've been active in politics before and I know how ministers "think" so
to speak. I know what works and what doesn't.

Many people if they were to read your writings as below, noting in
particular the tone with which it was written, would tend to be
discouraged from doing anything at all to address their concerns.

Any form of correspondence to ministers, from anybody, by whatever
implementation, is highly encouraged at all times when there is a
concern. It all about the cumulative effect. And that was the central
point of the whole Petrol Tax Letter approach - that you add your weight
to other correspondence.

(And I can tell you, there was an enormous quantity on the same subject
flowing into Parker's office over the last three months).

Dear Bill,

You may have missed it in the other email, but I mentioned insulting people is
not a good look, and I am sure that others on this list also find it annoying
to have to have rubbish like this in our inboxes.

Please knock it on the head - or leave.

Dear All,

I really appreciate being informed by enthusiastic members of this
forum, but as I run a bog standard MX, I rarely have an opportunity
to comment on various modifications. I drive my car enthusiastically
and love its personality. I enjoy the fact that many of us
acknowledge each other on the road and occasionally stop and swap
tales... that's the essence of owning these machines... not the
personal abuse that I have seen on this forum.
I realise I could vote with my feet and sign off, but I appreciate
what others have to say. It may be my imagination but whenever there
is an outburst of vitriol towards others on this mailing list that
gets very personal very rapidly, it seems to stem from one particular
person. We do not need to put up with bullies in our midst who believe
that the best way of getting their own way is to abuse others until
they back off. I agree with Chris.
