Wot a little ripper!

Post by DaveR » Mon Mar 20, 2006 10:36 am

Picked up the MX-5 Sat morning. Unfortunately, didn't get much time to
drive it over the weekend. I did manage to have a good look through it,
and check the fluid levels, tyre pressures etc, and tune in the radio.
Came with an owner's manual (in English), and what looks like an
original tool kit. Looks like the original owner here may have been an
enthusiast - just the way it's been looked after, and going to the
trouble to get an owner's manual.

Took it for a little blast on some back roads (behind the airport for
anyone who knows ChCh) Sunday afternoon (a bit cool, but OK with top
down and heater on), and that was FUN! Even keeping within the speed
limits, it was still a helluva lot of fun. I can see now why so many
people like them. It just puts such a big grin on your face. And I'm
relearning how to heel and toe (not much call for that in an automatic
Vectra). Had to drive it to work this morning - took the long way. Tis
a long time to wait till 5pm when I can drive it home!

Guys (and Girls),

There are a few people with a lot of knowledge out there about 'slapping
on a turbo' and some of us with some knowledge but want (and need) to
learn more.

I'm thinking about organizing a short run followed by some food (BBQ?)
and a technical / question / design session specifically around forced
induction, and the associated upgrades.

It gives you a change to show off your car and discuss the war stories
about the installation.

If you interested - please let me know. If you are out of Auckland - I
can probably arrange free accommodation (nothing too flash) if you are
interested.

Complete with HKS Turbo Manifold, T28 Hybrid turbo, HKS External
Wastegate, Evo VII intercooler, Greddy Type RS BOV, 460cc Injectors,
FMLink ECU (installed) - and a distinct lack of knowledge on how to plug
it all together.

Know ChCh well (although back of the airport wasn't about
driving in my younger days...), even tho I live in Auckland
now. Aren't they a fab little motor car... and you're right
about the silly grin that driving an MX5 brings. People in
this cynical age wonder what you've been up to.

Yeah. Lots of people used to park there to watch the . . . er . .
take-offs and landings. It's a bit busier than it used to be. they
shifted the aero club over to that side of the airport a few years
back. I used to compete in car trials with some friends (CCC and RATEC)
in the 80s and we used to drive around there on some events. Used to
see quite a few cars parked in the middle of nowhere. I bet they were
brassed off at having parked unknowingly on a trial route - most cars
had extra lights - lit up these cars like daylight!

Sounds good Chris,
Although i dont get up to Auckland much, maybe we
could do it as part of a run or tech day if there
arent enough takers.Im sure if we took some of the Non
"darksiders" for a spin in our turbo's they would soon
be off, with a turbo on top of the shopping list!!!
