Tyre recommendations (LONG)

Post by my2cta » Mon Mar 20, 2006 9:01 am

I need some new tyres on my NB, 195/50/15, to replace the original Michellin
Pilot SX's, and am considering both the Toyo T1-R and Goodyear GSD3 based on
what people on this list say about them. Tony's Tyre Service in Lower Hutt
will do the T1-R for $160 and the GSD3 for $179, so if performance on both
is similar and tyre wear is similar (30,000 ks has been quoted) it would
seem that the T1-R is the better buy. But what I'd really like to know is
how they compare for noise? If T1-R was noisier than the GSD3 I'd be
prepared to pay the extra for the GSD3. Has anyone any experience of both?
Failing that, for those who have used these tyres, what are your impressions
of noise from them? Do they squeal on cornering? What are they like on corse
chip or smooth tarseal? Any comments would be appreciated.

The original tyres have now done 45,000 kms and still have 3 mms tread left,
but I have started to notice grip in the dry isn't what it used to be and
once tread gets down to 3mm I wouldn't want to experiment with the wet
weather performance. The Tony's man suggested as I'd liked the Michelins
that I should also consider the Michelin Pilot Preceda. It is $240, but he
reckons it would last as well as the original Pilot SX's have done and it is
a very quiet tyre. If so, you pay 50% more and get 50% more life from the
tyre, so they aren't as expensive as they appear at first: price per km is
the same as the Toyos. As I understand it, these are the tyres fitted as
standard to the NC on the US market, does anyone know if they are fitted to
the NC here?

Tyre recommendations (LONG)

Noise?

Well I don't notice the noise from my T1-Rs, but I have a louder intake and
exhaust.

On very flat tarmac they'll chirp when testing the traction limit, but not
as easily and loudly as some tyres.

The Michelins that came on the NB were fantastic tyres, just expensive.

" If so, you pay 50% more and get 50% more life from the
tyre, so they aren't as expensive as they appear at first"

I wouldn't follow this rule because tyres have a shelf life, the
older/harder they get the less they'll grip and the more unsafe they'll be.

If it's not going to cost any more then you're better changing your tyres
more regularly. The reduced cost also helps if you run over some
metal/screws that destroy the tyre and you have to replace it.

Nankangs are used alot by the Drift racers for two
very good reasons...
1) They are cheap so you can burn them up at will.
2) they have CRAP grip so are good for getting the
back out with very little effort.

Youll notice that they often use sticky tyres such as
T1-R's and GSD3 on the front though for steering.

Hairdressers car??? well no. but it does have a HAIR DRYER!
If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

HI David thanks for the reply. It is interesting, so far I have recieved (other than you) no
responses I have pages on after market wheels and keeping your top down.Anyway I talked at legnth to a pro onthe south Is. and he swore by supercharging over turbo. He convinced me. He even directed me to Jacksons. Your Mazda speed won't be able to help me much here as far as installing, but I'd enjoy hearing your feedback. The base supercharger will give an 1800 a lot more kick and they now have 2 new things, one is a BTC boost timing controller, which make it more "drivable". The other is a boost kit, which add 15% more on top of the supercharger alone! Sounds dangerous. According to the Jackson website, the super will allow plenty of poop in any gear and can turn you sideways off the line. Your not having experienced the lack of power a lot of mx5 drivers face, you may not be able to analyze the difference; but would you be able to describe your performance? Thanks for the help Richard
Hello Richard

Mine has a Jackson unit that was installed by MazdaSpeed before it was imported. I am in Auckland and you are welcome to check it out.

Hi Richard

have you considered the FM, BRP or "Fast Forward" superchargers? They
all have a lot more potential (180-300 hp) than the JRSC. Prices are
somewhat higher, but I think the hp/$ equation also improves too :)
