Cost of going to work c/o Parker (Was: Top Down's The Point)

Hi Tim

Hey good on you Tim. That's the spirit!

40 mpg's a great figure for your NB. Just out of interest, what does the
Jazz achieve in the mileage stakes? I've heard it's very good for both 1300
and 1500 models.

I don't know if you're near Auckland, because these latest proposals from
David Parker could make it expensive to get to work and back if you
live on the North Shore and work in the CBD. $6.00 toll to go over the
harbour bridge each way per day and then a $5.00 toll to enter the CBD.
That's $11.00 a day or $55.00 a week!!

That's not far short of a tank of gas! And then there's proposals to toll
other sections of motorways and main roads as well. Pity someone who
is a rep working on commission only!

Running a car could prove very costly soon in these circumstances, what
with the dollar also dropping in value and the price of crude oil rising on
the average, meaning a litre of 91 might hit $2.00 by year's end.

What's Parker doing with the $600 + million per annum he's already getting
from Fuel and Road Taxes?!

Most of it's not going into roads for sure - I'd just like an honest answer
for once from the Minister.

Maybe we should all converge on Wellington in convoys and camp out in his
office foyer en-masse until we get an answer.

Tim, all suggestions are very welcome!

Cheers
Mark

40mpg sounds very high - I seem to get about 32.5 in a 1.8 NA, but it could
be my mathematically-challenged conversion ability. Or it could be that the
car needs cleaning out. What's the norm?

Speaking as a North Shore person, I have to say that the immediate response
of a colleague to the bridge toll proposals was: "$6 per crossing? That'll
cut the crime rate on the North Shore!"

sorry, "!=" is geeky shorthand for "not equal to"

just my opinion, but super grippy tyres have downsides, the car leans
more, if you lose it you're going that much faster, and the chassis
gets twisted around that much more. And of course they wear out fast.

The "original example" comment rings true - I'd love to have an early
1600 NA with those original lightweight, lightly-gripping tyres
(really) :)

A buddy of mine had a great time sliding his around on mud+snow tyres
until they wore out ! Probably not the most PC thing to admit to ...

OK, just to be accurate, I typically get around 13.7 kms/l (very
consistently) in local drives around the Wellington region (where I live).
By my calculations (multiply by 2.83 to convert to mpg) that's 38 mpg. On
longer trips I typically get better than 14.1 kms/l, which is 40 mpg. Recent
trip in the South Island we did 2250 kms and averaged 14.3 kms/l. Best ever
was a slow drive from Wellinton to Wanganui before Christmas in heavy
traffic, most of the trip around 90 kph and consumption was only 15.4 kms/l
which is better than 43 mpg. All this is top down. I do have the 6-speed
box, which has slightly higher gearing, so doing fewer revs when cruising
might make a small difference. The other thing is I always use 95/96 octane
fuel, which in my car, at least, improves fuel consumption significantly:
used to only get under 12 kms/l locally when I used 91 octane = 34 mpg.

The Jazz gets around 18 kms/l (51 mpg) on the same sort of local trips as
the MX5, although I drive it slower. Have had 19.6 kms/l out of it on a trip
= 55 mpg. It is a 1300 manual.

No tolls proposed down here - yet.

Funny how are fuel costs still seem to be high, I caught part of some news
prog' on sky TV the other day and it was talking about some state in
Aussies, Economic growth and positive outlook, one factor was "the falling
fuel prices"... hmmm... don't seem to be getting that here...

And yes as a shore person I cross the bridge back and forth sometimes twice
a day and more on weekends, could be looking at $24 a day. That's
ridiculous, I hope that one doesn't make it past go...

Mind you the toll to get into the city would also suck but would have
interesting implications on inner city living. Could be time to invest in an
apartment.
