Air Conditioner

Post by karlncas » Thu Mar 16, 2006 8:33 pm

Hi all,

Was wondering. When the A/C is on does the engine loose power or use more gas
per K?

How much less economical is it to drive with the roof down?

I'm sure there is someone out there who knows the answers to these questions

I remember hearing something about it being less economical to drive with
the widow open.

I think the level of resistance depends on how far open the widow is...

(apologies, Karl, I couldn't resist it)

Yes, the engine does lose some power to the aircon but not much from what I
have found. If you flatten your right foot, the aircon compressor is turned
off to give maximum power. There is an increase in fuel consumption with it
on but in my case I found it be less than 5%. I don't use it often but it is
very pleasant on a hot day, roof down and aircon on to keep your hands and
feet cool! On those rare wet days here in sunny Marlborough, or when
visiting the North, then the aircon does an excellent job of keeping the
windscreen clear from fogging up. Much more effective than just the fresh
air or heater. I wouldn't be without my aircon.
The MX5 definitely uses more fuel with the roof down but who cares? Roof
down is what it's all about for me!

Well, ours is an 89... and an awesome drive... Its only a little bit
played with ,, but the minor mods we have done make a helluva difference.
Always drive with the top down,,, unless its really really bucketing
down,,,, and we get 34 mpg in the old measurement system. No idea what that
equates to in k's... (my age is showing)
