Thread Stealing (was Re: Im looking for a...............)

Post by Mazda MX5 Club of New ... » Mon Mar 13, 2006 5:34 pm

Hi all, just a quick note from the administrator about email etiquette &
what is called thread stealing.

1. Please don't ever click reply to an email, change the subject and
send something new. Emails have special headers (they are hidden) with
information about the current subject, and people's mail programs and
our club archives this to track the conversation (thread). If you hit
reply and change the subject, it thinks you are talking about the same
thing and throws things out. You should ALWAYS start with a BRAND NEW
email, type a new subject and type your email. It is not that hard.

2. Also, please especially don't start talking about something else in
the middle of an email conversation. It is good manners to either
a) Start a new email conversation when talking about something new (with
a brand new email created from scratch) OR
b) If changing the conversation slightly, put the original subject in
brackets with 'was' in front of it, as I have done above.

3. Finally, please don't ever just reply to an email and ask another
question as in this thread. Annette asked about a Red bumper, then Ryan
just spoke over top and asked about a hard top. I'm sure you didn't
mean anything by it Ryan, but in email etiquette, this is pretty rude as
it amounts to talking over the top of someone. Annette still hasn't got
an answer to her email.

I've been meaning to do this for a while - as people seem to have been
doing this a lot lately...

You can see how the archived threads work here:
http://www.mx5club.org.nz/emaillists/nz ... ives/2006/
and you can see a few conversations that suddenly jump from one thing to
another...

Thanks
