airbag

Yes I know it is frowned upon by the MOT but I want to replace the
Huge air-bag Momo wheel on my 96 MX5 with a smaller momo. What are
the implications? Will the buzzer stay on all the time and will I
have to remove the warning light from behind the dash? All help would
be appreciated. cheers Jim Hall

I did mine when I went over to the US and bought a Miata.

It was pretty easy, you just had to be careful of the contacts for the
airbag unit. I.e. don't short them on any power or it may go off.
Disposal/storage could be a problem.

When you take the airbag out you are left with 2 wires. You put a resistor
(do a web search to find what one you need) between the two wires and stuff
them back into the momo hub adapter.

I did have to modify my hub adapter a bit for the wires but can't remember
if that was because I had a non genuine hub adapter for the sportline wheel
I was fitting or if there was some difference in the indicators on the US
and Jap MX5's. I think it was something to do with the indicator being on
the wrong side so you won't have any problems on a NZ car. Actually, if you
already have the hub adapter for your existing wheel then it will be fine.

It took me about an hour. The hardest part was using the gear puller to get
the old wheel off. Make sure you leave the nut on the end of the shaft or
the wheel will fly off and hit you in the face when it finally lets go.
Trust me on that one :)

Cheers
Mike.

Yeah I've run into that one already. It's a pain in the a really. I
wonder wether it is possible to use a quick release adapter for an
airbag wheel? There must be thousands of cars driving around NZ at
the moment who have "pimped their ride" and replaced the air-bag
wheel with an 8" pink leather number;-). Just to find another airbag
wheel that wasnt the size of a truck wheel would be better. The Mx5
momo 4 spoke wheel is about 38 cm. I have a replacement speedline
that is 33 and would be perfect. Do they still do warrants out in the
country? Cheers Jim

I agree about the truck comment. I put my original MX5 steering wheel into
my Mazda B2200 ute and it was exactly the same size as the old stuffed one.
Even the boss and indicator return fittings were the same.

Hey James,

While it is slightly bigger than 8" and not pink - I have installed a small wheel (about 30 cm) I have found it gives the drivers area far room.

I do prefer it over the larger wheel and not found heavy to use even with the power steering removed.

Good luck with the change.
