Sheet metal fabricator in Auckland ?
Hi, all
I think I've figured out a way to make a cold air induction system that is
compatible with my existing HKS dome-style air filter. It's a variant on
the Loch Stewart system (sad to see that Loch has passed away ...).
However to create the intake I need an adaptor piece made up that makes the
transition from the 79mm hole in the leaf guard up to 200mm to encase the
outer lip of the filter. Would also like some shielding made up to minimise
heat soak from the extractors.
Anybody know of an artist who works in stainless steel ?
Regards,
Greg

Hi Greg
Try Demac Metal Fabrications Ltd

Phone (09) 278-6961
They manufacture stainless air filters among a whole host of other things,
but do the odd one-off stainlesss fabrication job as well.
Cheers

I've seen one made out of a metal canister with lockable lit, paint tin
sized.
Have you considered plastic pipes? I made a CIA for our MPV and spray
painted it black, now it looks OEM.

Hi Greg,
I've got a piece of stainless steel sheeting as a shield for the air filter on my car - quite simply installed I think. Let me know if you want to take a look at it - you know where to find me :OD

If you had access to a car like this, would you take it back right away? Neither would I.

Sheet metal fabricator in Auckland ?
Hi, Glenn
I must say that I've been eyeing up the kitchen drawer lately ...
I'd wondered the same thing but also have in mind to minimise any pressure
drop across the intake. Thinking back to a past life I recall that Perry's
Chemical Engineer's Handbook had factors for pressure loss at pipe
expansions as well as contractions. A short 70-80mm diameter intake pipe
opening up suddenly into a large bowl may induce some pressure loss. The
transition piece I have in mind could potentially reduce that loss, but who
knows.
May pursue the custom fabrication idea for a while & see how I go.

Greg

Hi, Dave
Hadn't thought of encasing the whole thing - thanks for the idea.
Re plastic - yep, I did investigate that & would prefer to use plastic if I
can, if only for ease of fabrication. The challenge is getting from 80mm up
to 200mm diameter. Checked out a plumbing store & they had transition
pieces that went from 80 to 150mm, but we could only get up to 200mm using a
heavy sewer pipe connector.
The autospeed article that's appeared via this list before uses PVC plumbing
bits which is what got me thinking about it. Dave, have you had any problem
with distortion from elevated under-bonnet temperatures ? What sort of
plastic did you use ?

Greg

Will do - though I'm pretty tied up for the next few weeks. Should be your
way during the last week in March.
I also recall seeing the edge of some nice shielding in the photos of
Gazza's CIA masterpiece - Gazza, where did you get that done ?

Greg

Hi Greg.
If you want a more bell mouth shape then have a look
at stainless cake tins that have that funny cone in
the middle. Mostly used for making dessert
cakes/puddings.
you could cut out the center to 200mmm diameter then
cut the cone at 70mm diameter, then just have a simple
drum shape to enclose your filter at 200mmm diameter.
The auto speed website tested just such a thing and
found that they could get up to 20% more flow than a
standard straight flare!!
There you go ...
If you want any more cooking tips then just let me
know!

Sheet metal fabricator in Auckland ?
Hey Greg
Cheers
It's just a plain piece of 2mm stainless plate I got given. I popped down to
the nearest sheet metal place they guillotined it to size and put two 450
folds in it for $10.00 You could use thinner but it may vibrate around.
I can measure it up if you like and PDF you a sketch. of where the folds
were, I had to cut out a couple of little bits where it mounted, so I can
send you a pic of that also should you wish.
Of course you can pop over sometime if you want I'm on the Shore (you live
out East if I recall), and I'll even make you a coffee with my new milk
frother thingy I got at Briscoe's today (but the coffee will be instant,
sorry
Cheers
