Crashworthiness

Firstly, thanks to everybody who sent their commiserations and good wishes.
Ann & I have both come to the conclusion that we were very lucky!

To answer the legal point raised by Chris Tankard; Yes, indeed, the law
requires that you drive so as to be able to stop clear of the vehicle ahead,
in the event of a sudden stop by that vehicle.

If you hit that vehicle, it is fairly self evident that you were not complying
with the law, so I guess that there a certain amount of "Mea Maxima Culpa"
involved in this.

However, the law also assumes that drivers will do what the "ordinary man in
the street, possessed of normal faculties" will do.

(As a complete aside, this person is described in law as "The Man on the
Clapham Omnibus" and he is an important person in Case Law. The description
was originally applied by Lord Havers, The British Lord Chief Justice and the
father of the famous actor Nigel Havers, ( There, that's killed another few
brain cells).

Basically, anyone who drives in a manner in which "The man on the Clapham
Omnibus" would not drive, commits the offence of "Careless Use of a Motor
Vehicle"

I think it reasonable to assume that a normal driver would not, when only a
few metres from a set of lights, with no traffic ahead of them and able to
safely and legally proceed, apply absolutely the maximum possible braking in
order to stop.

I had, of course, come to the totally erroneous conclusion that the driver in
front was a reasonable driver, and I had shifted my view through the
intersection, ahead of her car. I did not see her braking until quite late in
the piece.

In many ways it was a fortunate accident, had she not braked so hard, her rear
end would have been a lot lower and had the MX5 not had the low bonnet it
would have hit the rear squarely, rather than "submarining" under her car. As
it was, her car simply rolled up our bonnet and finished up sitting on top of
us.

The impact on us, in the car, was actually quite light I think. In fact, I
can't really remember it, but I am a little stiff tonight.

The police took a number of photos, I will see if I can get copies of them and
send them to Nigel as "unusual MX5 pic of the month" You will conclde that the
MX5 is a tough little motorcar.

I understand that the damage amounts to about $4000.00

Hi Eric, good to hear you survived another of lifes litle trials!!! I saw a
white series 1 go up the rear end of another car heading south by Mt
Wellington last Wednesday about 5pm (I was heading North). The first thing I
saw was the smoke of locked up wheels. The MX5 did not look good.
I guess if the car in front has ABS and you don't, stay back even further -
which means that on the motorway you will actually go backwards as everyone
cuts in front of you to fill the gap you have left for safety reasons!!!

I look forward to the photos for topdown.

Im sure i dont have to tell you this Eric but its time
to do "a deal" with the repairer to get all those
other little bits/dings/scratches done at the same
time... some of the extra cost can be booked to the
insurance company job so you end up getting some of
that work done at a cheaper cost than if you went in
off the street.
Maybe there is a silver lining after all.

Ftlbs...
480Nm divid by 0.74= 648 FtLbs
then divide by the final drive ratio of 4.3 and we get
a rear wheel Ft Lbs figure of...150.84FtLbs

Great idea Glenn, trouble is that i just spent the best part of $800 getting
all of that done about 9 months ago, mind you, I might be able to swing a
top with a glass window, now there's a thought!

Simon, you are absolutely correct, it was in the case of Lady Chatterley's
Lover, however, you err in one respect, Lord Havers ruled that D. H.
Lawrence's " Lady Chatterley's Lover" was not a pornographic book.

Actually, it is a book I have never read, if anyone has a copy I would
appreciate being allowed to read it

I couldn't believe it for a mo this morning when I saw little PURLEE right
smack bang on the front page of the NZ Herald - complete with paper weight!

Have to say you're quite right about the MX5 being a strong little automobile
- those Diamantes weigh in at about 1,500 Kg.

I'd hadn't guessed just how far under the Diamante PURLEE had travelled.
Importantly though at the end of the day - everyone involved was A.O.K.

I'll always wave to a fellow enthusiast (whether they want me too, or not

The car and it's paint is pretty much as it left the factory...although the
car is a VR Ltd (and only one of 800 :0) and it's Excellent green
metallic. The clear markers and spoiler were added later.
It's always nice to get a response, let's keep it up.
