MX5 Crashworthiness

Post by EricW » Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:40 am

There has often been comment on the list regarding the crashworthiness of the
MX5

I regret to say that I have just found out, the hard way, how good they are.

Ann and I were travelling down East Coast Bays Rd this morning, behind a
Mitsubishi Diamante, coming to the lights at Rangitoto College.

About 50 ft short of the lights, the light went amber and, rather than as
anyone else would, going through the lights, the woman ahead braked very hard,
locked up, and slid sideways. I could not avoid her and PURLEE slid into her
rear end. There was absolutely no reason for the woman not to have carried on
through the lights.

Amazingly, our bonnet went under the rear of the Diamante and lifted the rear
of that car onto our bonnet, so that the back wheels of the Diamante were
parked in the middle of PURLEE's bonnet.

The exhaust pipe of the Diamante just cracked our windshield and ripped the
hood.

However, the actual damage to the car is, whilst extensive, quite moderate for
the size and type of impact, and Ann and I stepped out, without a scratch and
the passenger cell remained completely intact and the doors still opened. The
people in the Diamante were also unhurt.

I have seen people killed in more minor crashes.

I do have to say, don't try this at home! But if you do happen to have a
bingle, the MX5 is not a bad choice of vehicle to do it in.

We understand that PURLEE will be in hospital for about a fortnight, but
should make a full recovery.

MX5 Crashworthiness

Post by RD5T3R » Thu Mar 02, 2006 9:55 am

Very sad to hear about PURLEE guys. We certainly heard the crash reported on
ZB a few times so its even sadder to know it involved an MX from the club AND
HBC locals.

I know you will also feel some compassion as I managed to re-arrange the front
end of the 528 on the arse end of a Previa at the Silverdale motorway off ramp
roundabout last friday. The frustration of shunting someone up the arse
because they have suddenly stopped when the exit was clear was massive. As
the womans said afterwards - my daughter (a passenger in her car) wondered why
I didn't go too.

I can assure her I am still wondering and so will my bank acount. Fortunately
the only damage was to my No plate and bonnet - hers was already too battered
to note if I had caused any of it!!

A Panelbeaters dream she must be.

Cheers

Sorry to hear about the accident - although very glad that you are both
OK.

I saw your car on the back of a truck this morning on ECB road - in an
amusing twist the truck ran an orange and I almost went into the side of
it!!! Would have been funny in a very sad kind of way.

If you are missing the 5 too much give me an email - you can come do

This is just another case of bad drivers not having
accidents just seeing lots of them in thier rear view
mirror...
What was the other drivers explanation why she
braked so hard???
After all the definition of a yellow light is "stop if
it safe to do so"...and skidding sideways to a halt
isnt what id call safe!!!
Just another unfortunate example of not being able
to trust the lemmings that are out on the road, and
they seem to be getting more and more,Too busy looking

Hi Eric

Commiserations and sympathies Eric and very glad to hear that both you and Ann
are O.K. because that's what's most important. It's good though to also hear
that PURLEE will be out and about again in just a couple of weeks.

The lady in the Diamante is clearly in the wrong, because an amber light
means: "Stop, but only if you are able to safely do so". Locking your brakes
and sliding sideways is clearly not stopping safely.

All the very best to both you and Ann.

Cheers
Mark

Couldn't you argue that you are required to stay a safe stopping distance
behind a vehicle in the event of its doing a normal straight-line emergency
stop? A vehicle which goes into a spin or half spin and thereby stops within
the normal stopping distance might be viewed as being akin to an object coming
out into the road within safe stopping distance. It is our of control and
might just as easily have gone into the opposite lane and hit someone coming
in the opposite direction - in which case the accident would not have been
viewed as the fault of the oncoming car.

I'm not sure that an insurance company or the police would see it that way,
but it might be worth exploring. Was the silly woman insured at all, I wonder?
The idea that one can drive without insurance seems criminal to me.

Just that happened to me a few years ago. Bloke in a Ford courier spun to a
stop when a kid ran out in front of him, I was able to steer off to the left
but still hit his rear wheel. The police said that I would normally get a
ticket but due to the way the Ford stopped he would let me off. PHEW!!!
The kid was ok but very shaken as the Ford just touched him with the front
guard.
I was in a Subaru wagon at the time.

Simon, I certainly agree with your line of reasoning.

There's also the issue of Careless Driving or even Dangerous Driving on the
part of the Diamante driver, that if proven, could well exonerate any other
party that became involved as a result.

There's simply no excuse for someone sliding broadside just for an amber
light.

If it was up to me, any other party that became involved as a result of such
an unnecessarily careless (and indeed dangerous) action on the part of the
Diamante driver would certainly not be held responsible in any way.

Anyway, that's only my ten cents worth, because I don't make the laws.

Only politicians have that power - as does a certain one among them who
reached 120 + km/hr in 50km/hr zones through small towns to reach a plane on
time. For a rugby match in Wellington.

Cheers
Mark

Just got back from the dyno about 5 minutes ago with a
big big grin.

The results were 142 rear wheel killowatts(193Rwhp)
at 6600rpm and 480Nm(dont know what that is in FtLbs)
at 4300 torque peak!Thats about 220Hp at the engine!

Had a couple of rich spots, one of which was at about
6200 which has hurt the Hp figure quite a bit... i
think the magic 200 Rear wheel Hp is doable with a bit
more timing and adjusted fuel without upping boost.

There is much more in the car yet as at 7psi we were
only at 70% duty cycle at 7000 rpm with an afr of
about 11.7:)
Operator thinks that 9-10 psi will be the limit before
the injectors run out.
running 98RON octane i was only pulling 3 degrees of
timing max from a base of 10, and the dyno guys said
there was plenty of room for more advance as his ears
and the knock sensor didnt detect anything.

I need to get the gearbox input shaft and clutch
thrust bearing sorted before i push it in the next
tune ,
Hell i think that 30 dyno runs back to back is
probably enough punishment for my little car for one
day !
VERY VERY HAPPY CHAPPY!!!
