replacement engine

Hi folks

Looking at another second-hand MX-5. This time it's an 89 model with
160,000km on the odo, but with lots of receipts for work done. It had a
replacement engine 30,000km back. I presume that you can only fit the
correct engine to an MX-5? How do I check? Is there an engine code I
can easily check? It looks OK, but I;m no mechanic.

Taking a different approach with this one. It's only $6000, but is in
very good condition for its age, and looks like it has been well looked
after. Hey, all the receipts are in a clearfile (the sort of thing I'd
do). It's also had work done on the clutch, gearbox, diff, had a new
hood in 2000, so I;m hoping that the previous owners have done most of
the maintenance you would need to do for a car that's done 160,000km.
The only area that there are no receipts for is the suspension, so I
guess it has the original bushes and shocks. Anyway, I;m having my
garage check it out tomorrow. I;m working on the theory that I;m not
investing too much in the purchase, so I will have a bit of spare cash
to spend on improvements.
