bonnet up is not a good look.....

Post by peter » Sun Feb 26, 2006 10:55 pm

I had to make a sign up to stop my colleagues from pulling over in rush hour traffic to assist! Another hundred yards up Onewa Rd and I could have coasted down Lake Rd, parked the car properly etc.

Bloody AA sent a towtruck on my instructions then cancelled it and sent a technician - 10 seconds after he arrived he had agreed with my diagnosis and blew the contact centre up for wasting my time : almost two hours from breakdown to towtruck arriving.

Had the same problem three years ago : box stuck in reverse when going from 4th to 3rd... replaced the gearbox with a secondhand one from Mazspare. This time the garage reconditioned the box, 5th and reverse cogs were binding apparently. Should get my baby back tomorrow!

Hi Peter

I've heard of these gearbox cog binding problems before and apparently it's
been traced in the main, to the inadequate lubrication qualities of some
brands of the standard 75W/90 gear oil used in MX5 gearboxes and diffs.

The solution could well be to use Redline synthetic Light Shock Gear Oil
75W/140 in your transmission - it's a super slick formula well suited to the
road and the odd squirt on the track. Super Light Shock Oil is also available
(but is not recommended) as is Heavy Shock Oil (75W/250) but this grade is
really only for track use.

Can be purchased by the quart (950ml) from any BNT branch for $20.20 + GST.
(I think you may need three bottles for the MX5 transmission - and you can use
it in your diff as well).

Here's a link to the Redline site that you'll find interesting:

Hi again Peter

One question about Redline Light Shock gear oil came up re it possibly not
being suitable for manual syncro gearboxes.

Best place to discuss this is BNT's Newmarket branch Ph (09)379 9394

They sell Redline Light Shock 75W/140 gear oil by the bucket load to people
running Mitsi Evo's, Subaru Sti's and Nissan Skyline Turbo's. Someone who
works at the Newmarket branch also runs it in his Mazda 323 GTX Turbo.

No problems with syncro manual shifts have been reported - in fact just the
opposite - where gearboxes were breaking under high loads before, there's now
far fewer problems.

Cheers
