Prophylactic Action

Post by EricW » Mon Feb 20, 2006 10:47 am

With our 5 coming up on 100,000 Km, I am starting to think about the timing
belt, and I will probably do the water pump at the same time.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to other items I should sensibly do while
the front of the engine is in bits.

Eric
I changed the tensioner and idler rollers, 2 small water hoses (10mm ID) as
they were impossible to remove without damage, cam shaft oil seals and the v
belts as well. I don't think I would have changed the water pump had the idler
mounting bolt not seized but the price of the pump was reasonable and probably
worth it

In addition to what Wayne suggests, the front crankshft oil seal might be a
good option too. My wife's Blue 90 with 132k is leaking quite robustly from
there now. Yes, it is getting changed this weekend, along with tha fan
belts.

Hi Eric

I would also suggest the water pump at the same time as it sits behind the cam
belt, and will inevitably fail one day then you have to do the cam belt
again.. They are under $100 from Autoclutch in Sandringham, they seem to be
the genuine item with the brand scratched off, I was impressed with what I got
for $100. Supercheap do one too but who knows about the quality.

The place you get it done can cost you a lot though, I went to city garage and
it took 5.5 hrs (incl an oil change). I took in the cam belt, water pump, NEW
crank bolt (very important) but they also bought a new crank shaft seal and
tensioner (these bits cost a lot, so get them yourself first). They are
expensive for labour and took a bit too long in my books, I was told 3 to 3.5
hrs when I rang around (get a quote in writing) good thing is they are
familiar with the car (should be quicker??) and guarantee the work, plus some
of the cost goes back to our club in sponsorship. Nice people though.

Hi Eric

Shop around for your tensioner and idler. I got mine from Saeco Bearings on
Wairau Road. $33 and $25 each plus GST. Are the 1800 and 1600 ones
interchangeable?

Cheers
Euen

Took the day off to get the car cert'd, and thought id
drop in to AMI to get the insurance sorted for the
car now thats its been given the big grunt.
I advised the lady behind the counter that it was
now fitted with a turbo and it required a cert as it
was a major modification...
she entered it into her computor and and said, "no
problem" then i asked what the new premium would be
and she told me that there would be no change in
premium or excess. I made her double check that she
had enterd the turbo mod in the right places and she
had.
I guess its because i am now old enough (29) not to be
considered a boy racer any more!
So i now have the car road legal and insured, WHEW.
