Second Hand NC for Sale

Post by EricW » Fri Feb 17, 2006 6:57 pm

Hi folks,

Driving down Wairau Rd today and to my surprise saw an NC for sale at
Archibald and Shorter

This must be the very first Jap import NC as that is where it comes from, it
is Ivory, a six speed, had (when I finished test driving it) 1212Km on the
clock and they are asking $38K. It comes with the full factory warranty, or so
I am lead to believe.

Having driven one now, I offer the following thoughts for those of you who
have not yet had the opportunity.

While it is not much bigger than an NA, it feels a lot bigger and more solid.
It runs far smoother. It goes like the proverbial seduced anthropoid (a raped
ape), a lot more power than the NA and is far better finished, even than the
NB. But just a little too much plastic inside, it is quite "Z4" inside, but
not done as well.

The road holding is just sublime! I tooled it out to Coatesville and while I
did not go much over the 100 km I certainly did not slow down for the corners.
It just sat there and took it, even when I got a little off line it showed no
desire to play up and I am sure I could, with a little practice, have gone far
faster. It just goes flat and fast. In general power and acceleration it
probably outperforms my BMW 528, (nothing like as ultimately fast though) I
doubt that I could stay with one on any kind of windy road in the BMW,
assuming the same level of motivation

I was not that enamoured of the gearbox, it was quite notchy, but of course
it is also quite new, however I could not really see the point of the 6
speeds, the top three gears seem so close in ratio and the power is delivered
over such a wide rev range that it does not really encourage a lot of stick
stirring, you could happily leave it in fourth and it would get you round most
mountain roads, there is just that much flexibility. The two lower gears are
quite low, and it is really easy to hit the rev limiter with smart
acceleration, It WORKS!

The brakes are amazing!

There were, however, things that I did not like about it. The bonnet obscures
far more of your view than it does on an NA, it is more difficult to park as a
result, the instruments are not as easy or intuitive to read and the heater
controls are not colour coded, I had to stop and put my glasses on to see what
the knobs did. The design honours design and appearance far more than it does
practicality, It has lost the out and out "sportscar" appeal of the NA

I did not feel that I had as much leg room as I do in the NA and I could not
get far enough back from the wheel to be completely comfortable, but the elbow
room is better. The steering column now tilts, which makes getting in much
easier, because the footwell is quite crowded with pedals and footrest

You cannot put the roof up without either lowering the windows or opening the
doors, the latch (there is only one, centrally mounted) will not reach. But
you ca put the top up with one hand, from the drivers seat.

The car is slightly more draughty with the top down than is the NA, but much
quieter top up.

The one thing that really bugged me was the left foot rest. It is very wide. I
do not have particularly big feet for my size, I was wearing size 9 business
shoes. Every time I tried to do a fast change, my left foot fouled on the
footrest as I operated the clutch, Moving my foot, consciously, to the right,
caused me to foul the brake. I would need sneakers to drive this car fast,
However, the footrest is a lot more comfortable in normal driving on the
motorway. The handbrake is now on the right side of the console and the tip
dug into my left thigh, I suppose that it does not now dig into my wife's
right thigh, but that is not the point.

I guess that, having a lot of time in the NA, this car takes some getting used
to and it would, I am sure, improve dramatically with familiarity.

Would I buy one? Yes absolutely, overall it's a neat car, but probably the 5
speed or paddle shift auto would be my choice, I would rip out the footrest if
I had a manual!

Would I sell my NA to buy one? Probably not.

I would be interested in hearing comments from other members who have driven
it

Eric,
I haven'y driven one yet, but my comment to you is I'm as jealous as all
getout that you are getting the opportunity to do so. We need more car sale
yards with them in Blenheim!

Well, here's my 2 cents worth... as of November last year

Hm. What can I say? It was a nice drive, but I like my drives to make me
grin and feel that I'm actually driving for the driving's sake and use up
the whole alphabet, not just to comfortably go from A to B.

Slightly disappointed at the accelleration rate, obviously has more grunt
than the StripeMonster (1.6 for those of you that don't know), but after all
the hype about the bigger engine I somehow expected more of a kick in the
arse feeling.

Went round and round in a small roundabout, sure hangs in there, but the
steering felt sloppy somehow, and there was more lurch than I thought it
would be (this car didn't have the sports package mind you)

Felt slightly claustrophobic interior wise. I hate the way the dash is so
much higher than mine, not to mention the look of it. Blargh! And don't get
me going about the steering wheel, it's so fat I couldn't even wrap my
fingers around it...

I'll have a bruise from the blimming handbrake. I like to rest my knee
against the console when driving and I had the handbrake poking me in the
thigh the whole time. Whoever decided to put the handbrake on the drivers
side of the tunnel should be shot. Twice thru the gentials! And the
snick-snick feeling of the gearshift is gone too. Too smooth.

Hum... yeah, all in all, nice. Lots of people will love it, but to me it
hasn't got the sportscar feeling to it at all, so I'll pass thanks. I would
still buy one if I were looking for a new roadster in that price class, but
no way am I trading in mine for it. I like the roughness of my car and the
new Mex is just too refined IMHO.

I'll stick to my NA :D

Hi Eric, great you got to take it for a drive. I visited the yard twice last
weekend and played the veeeeeeeeeeery serious buyer, the second time with
President Keith and was told that the car had arrived with 990km on it and
they were not letting it out for drives as they wanted to keep the km down.
Same car is advertised in Herald and Trademe at just under $37,000. There is
also another advertied in Lower Hutt for about $39,000 and Ellis Utting have
said they can bring in a Black with DarkTan interior and roof for retail of
$35,000.

Not bad that in less than 6 mnths, imports are arriving at $10,000 under list
price, role on next yr I might be able to afford one!!

With regard to the handbrake, the car is obviously going to sell far more
units in the good old US of A than it will in right hand drive countries, the
lever is correct for left hand drive.

It is, however a real pain in the bum on a right hand drive car
