rollbar thickness

Post by poison » Fri Jan 27, 2006 11:56 am

Hi Chris

It's a good point, IMHO the thinner bars would 'look' a bit
ineffective'. Micky has a roll bar on her car and it's all
padded up so it's quite thick, it looks great, so you always
have the option of adding padding to give it a) extra safety
and b) an extra thick look, as it's certainly harder to make
it smaller :-) plus I guess the thinner one would be maybe
15% lighter.

Be keen to see how it looks, will you get something down the
sides of the seats? as our early MX5's don't have any side
intrusion protection, although it would make it harder to
get in and out of the car... Thoughts on that anyone...

bolts ,... 40 mm diameter and with padding 50 mm pipe and proper thickness
, has been in a NB .

a friday bargain for NZ $ 200.-

Gaz,

Nothing going down the side - simply a rear hoop, 2 straight stays (I
think that's the term), a diagonal brace and bar to mount a harness.

Good point on the weight. Sometimes I lose focus. Why make it heavier
than required? Padding is a requirement also - so adding padding to a
thick bar = ???

To answer your question - I did try out a car with a full cage and side
bars last week - getting in and out is near impossible.

Another thing to remember is as soon as you go forward of the rear of
the seats (as with the side intrusion bars) you then need to get LVV
certification.

I'm having the work done not far from you, so I will swing it around
when done.

If you are in Auckland I would be very keen for a look
please. As long as it's clear of my head and the roof can
still go up and down you have a deal, if out of Auckland can
do do a photo please...

Thanks

Thanks Bert - having looked at the pics - it looks a great buy for
someone (looks really tidy), however it would not pass certification for
club sport (something that I am after).

Bert I seem to recall you're in Wellington, so a quick
looksee is not really on the cards, and freight is not so
bad within the North Island, my main question is "when the
roll bar is installed, and when the seat is all the way
back, is it behind the seat, and not over the top?" the law states
-The bars are positioned, beind, a plane extending upward
parallel to the back of the headrest.
-In such a way that the headrest would provide protection
from head contact during a crash.

So if it fits behind the seat and not over the top it is
legal and I would be keen to get it.

Cheers

Hi Chris

The final decision will come down to the engineering calculations as to the strength of the cage. Providing that your engineer knows what he is doing then you should have no problem. Who are you using as I have heard that Herbert Fabrications on the shore are very good.

Chris,

will check the size and let you know, will also send you a link to pics

I have commited to get all the measurments etc for another member so will
let you also have those.

I have an approved bar and have been racing with it for the last few years,
it has the padding on it and just rubs the soft top when you raise or lower
it, so it is right on the max hight with the padding.

plan is to do this in the weekend.

Another point to be wary of, if you are tall. The cage/main hoop must be 50mm above and 100mm behind the seated driver as described in the MSNZ regs. When we were designing mine we discovered that with standard seats the main hoop sat higher than the hood. (I am 188cm tall) Consequently I have ended up with new seats that sit almost right on the floor and gave about another 70mm of clearance for the main hoop. Now it should just fit under the hood.

Cheers

That's 50mm above head with helmet, right?

You must get a sore botty from the bumps with no padding in the seats!

Hi Kate

Right

Car hasn't reached the road yet but you will probably be right on that as
well. There is a bit of padding in the seats but not as much as the
standard ones.

Hi Ian

I went with the Autosport Rallymaster Sprint. It is a Kevlar bucket and
they can supply the mounting brackets which provide provision for tilting
the seat. (just a series of bolt holes) The mounting bolts on the seat
bucket are actually on the sides to allow for getting the seat as low as
possible. Forward-backward seat movement with the standard brackets would
require slots in the floor with large washers under the bolt heads.

Mounting them to the MX5 seat runners may be an interesting challenge and I
think is also something that may require certification.

I went with Autosport because they were local (Glenfield), were prepared to
slightly modify the bucket to fit the car and I could also choose the
upholstery material.

Bearing in mind that my project is not actually an MX5, the next few
comments may or may not be relevant. The floor pan of the TG has 2 raised
mountings (front and rear) for the standard MX5 seats. We have actually had
to remove the rear ones to get the new seats low enough. This has meant the
seat has been moved back a little so we may have some more work to do around
the pedals.

Cheers

Hi gaz,
My roll bar only just clears the up and downing of the roof, the padding
that is required for lvvta could cause a problem ( or you can just remove it
later after your wof ) or you could join the local motorsport club and get a
clubmans licenses and the wof nazizs cannot touch it
