New Head Unit for NB required

Post by alisam » Sat Oct 09, 2010 9:46 pm

I have this head unit:
http://www.mx5mart.co.nz/photos/martpho ... stereo.jpg

and am thinking of purchasing this unit:
http://www.jvc.co.nz/KW-XR616.html

I will have to get it professionally installed.

Do you see any obvious issues?

Edit> It is a Jap Import with a band expander.

Shouldn't have any issues so long as you get the full cradle for the JVC, and 01 on wiring plug adapter for Mazda.

Also, get them to check the ohmns of the speakers first. I have a feeling the Bose speakers are something like 2 Ohmns or similar which will not be compatible with the new headunit.
You may need new speakers.

Anyone know what size speakers are typically in the NB ?. Also how many?

JB-HiFi have the unit on sale for $297 and includes 6" JVC Speakers.

I think door speakers are 7"x 5" for standard ,If your car is a BOSE setup,They are a 6" sub,But if the headunit you have shown is right i don't think it is,Does it have BOSE badges on the speaker covers ?

The headunit in the picture is exactly the same as ours.
No there are no BOSE badges.
So there appears to be (each side), a bottom large speaker and a top small speaker.

You should have no worries with speakers then.

OK, I have had a couple of on-line quotes.
I realise that I will need to visit.

Nevertheless:

a) This for the JVC (double din)
Quote...
From the picture I believe you will need a dash trim for your stereo this is $70.
The supply and install of the JVC double Din unit would be $450 incl gst.
... could check the speakers and advise you at the time whether they need to be replaced. Most times an aftermarket stereo will make them sound a lot better unless they are completely stuffed.

b) I decided to get an estimate for a single din unit

Quote...
• Panasonic CQ-RX420 CD-Tuner USB-iPod Input
• Sony XS-GTF1625 front Speakers
• Mazda Fitting Kit with Pocket
• Installation of above into the MX5
• Total $420.00 Incl GST

So, I have something to think about. The first option is ... Does the $450 include the dash trim ( I don't know enough to know why I need it). I can always ask!

My thoughts now is to go with a single din and when the times comes, put back / or just provide the original stereo unit. Also, first impressions from the forum is that I don't have a BOSE System.

Both units can accept a USB device and my Sony NW-E005F (which is about 4 years old, but still working) is why I want such a feature.

Finally, $420 complete (or less if I don't need new speakers) is in my budget. I don't need (or should I say the wife) a rolls royce system, just a more modern unit.

New Head Unit for NB required

Post by Grant » Wed Oct 13, 2010 6:29 pm

My 1998 NB with the Bose system fitted had 8" speakers in the doors. These
were the horrible low impedance Bose speakers and I replaced them with 8"
bass units from Supercheap. These along with the Bose tweeters sounded good
with the JVC single DIN unit I fitted. I added attenuators to the tweeters
to balance the sound as they were too sensitive compared with the bass
units.
My current 2006 NC has the Bose system fitted and I'm not too impressed with
its sound either but as its integrated into the dash it would be too
difficult to change.

Grant.

The car is my wifes and she does bugger all mileage.
Nevertheless, I do drive it and I get frustrated with the expander range i.e cannot get National Program (no jokes please), plus I love to listen to podcasts.

I have a couple of MP3 players and I see the wife having access to a USB front port for a Sony NW-E005F (which is about 4 years old).
I live in Hobsonville (Waitakere - perhaps just Auckland that we are now part of the Super City) and require a basic stereo system. I don't even think I need a CD player as I have converted everything to MP3.

I don't have an IPOD. I am not an Apple fan, but most things revolve around them as regards car audio.

I am thinking of going to Rapid Radio in Auckland. If I don't need new speakers (and may not do, since there are no Bose labels) then they have quoted $380 incl GST for:
• Panasonic CQ-RX420 CD-Tuner USB-iPod Input
• Mazda Fitting Kit with Pocket
• Installation of above into the MX5

If you can arrange an install, what is your background in this area? I would like to know whether you know what your are doing (no offence).

Had a look at your photos and wow! You have certainly gone to town.

My initial thoughts were for a double din unit as it was neat and tidy i.e the JVC unit. However, I don't think it is worth the price (to us) I have been quoted

PS The car is an NB 2002.

buy this and my auto sparkie will install for $60 cash

http://www.jbhifi.co.nz/car-sound-gps-n ... sku-29902/

that works out to $357 wich is cheaper than rapid radio and includes a better head unit

let us know what you want to do

cheers

and it doesn't fit.
Once the stereo is out, the JVC is smaller, in all directions.

So I have a double din unit which is useless. There is no Mazda fitting kit, they only do a single din unit with what I assume is a shelf.

Believe me, it's jam and bread for a month (so the wife says).

Not quite bread and jam.

The wife rang JB-HiFi and we have now returned the stereo and received a full refund.

Had Rapid Radio fit the Panasonic CQ-RX320 with the single din fitting kit.

I am happy.
(it may not be the best stereo in the world but it does everything we need and it looks pretty good in the double din area).

Naturally, I retained the original stereo.
