CD unit affected by heat?

Post by alisam » Fri Feb 12, 2010 10:13 pm

I have a 2001 NB with a double din unit (I think that is what they are called). There is no brand name.

Anyway, it has a band converter and I cannot use my Belkin FM Transmitter to play MP3's through the radio (even though it works in my NZ new Volvo).

So I have decided to use CD-RW disks. What I find is that the disk is OK in the morning on the way to work, but will not play the same CD on the way home in the evening. I have even tried taking the CD into work with me, since it is air conditioned.

My conclusion is that heat affects the CD unit.

Anybody have the same problem. It's a bit of a hassle since the band converter does not play the National program on 101.4.

Do you have a paper label on the CD? I found my CD's with labels will only
play somethimes, I'm failry sure uit's due to the humidity and the paper
thickness.

If not that I'd also agree with heat, more of it's effect on the CD player
not the CD itself.

There are some great deals on MP3 players from
http://www.parallelimported.co.nz/car-a ... decks.html for around $200
bucks. And for a little more with a direct Ipod connection.

.... a VOLVO??????

I found rewritable disk is less tolerant to the heat.

You could try CD-R, I have no issue with this type of disk with my Sony CD unit. It's not a double din and mine is NA, but worth a try? It's not that expensive per disk, if you get in 50 or 100 disks with spindle.

CD unit affected by heat?

With a band expander you will not get the full tuning range of 88 - 108MHz
as the Japanese radio range is not as wide. The Belkin probably works at one
end of the FM band that you can't tune to because of the restricted tuning
range.
Install a NZ new radio with all the capabilities you need for much better
performance than the Japanese original unit.
Recorded CDs have much less reflective performance than the connercial
pressed units and with slight mis-alignment with heat many older car CD
players can't cope with them. CDRW are even worse so some players will work
with CDR but not CDRW.

There is no paper label on the CD but there is a marker pen label (and yes on the correct side).

Do you know a good place to purchase a 'filler' to take up the space if I remove the present unit?

Guess that explains the Volvo then

Re the stereo filler, you can buy a pocket (useful) from here for $40+GST
http://www.mx5mart.co.nz/db.cgi?db=mart ... records2=1

This way you can fit a normal single DIN unit rather than the factory double DIN. Note if your system is a Bose I think you need to swap your speakers too, I'm not 100% on that. Anyone help here?

I'm a National listener as well. Unfortunately the Bose system in my NZ new
2006 NC is rubbish on AM which I have to use as the FM coverage here is
poor. Sensitivity is ok but AM audio quality is limited by poor radio
design.
On my previous NB which had a single DIN Bose system, I replaced the
speakers and disconnected the Bose amplifier so I could use the JVC single
DIN unit I installed. Didn't have to get a pocket as there already was one.
If MX5 mart can't help, MX5 parts in the UK often can although the cost
might be up a bit with freight added.
200mm speakers can be difficult to find but they are available and will give
much better sound than the Bose system did. I've gone right off Bose after
the poor sound quality of the systems in my NB and now my NC. The Sony I
installed in my Kia Sorento work vehicle is far superior to the NC Bose
system. the Kia's OEM system didn't do MP3 playback but other wise wasn't
too bad.

CD unit affected by heat? - Have a laugh at Bose

Post by poison » Sun Feb 14, 2010 1:50 am

I decided to Google "Hate Bose".. and wow...... It's incredible how many
people out there clearly HATE Bose.

Anyway I digress, worthy of a laugh, here are some quotes thanks again to
Google...

BOSE ....

Buy Our Sh!!ty Equipment

Bloody Overpriced Sound Equipment

Buy Other Speakers Eventually

Bad, Often Sad Experience

Bastards Offering Sorry Engineering

Better Off with Something Else

Bring On Suckers' Egos

BOSE on some car forums is also referred to as BLOSE (Blows)

And a great quote from the page below "Friends don't let Friends buy Bose"

An interesting web page called "Why Bose Sucks Review Resources"
http://www.firstadopter.com/fa/archives ... .html#more

And some scientific sounding people bagging them too

The pockets are also available from Repco, along with adaptor cables that allow you to match most breeds of stereo to many car types. (almost plug and play)
TG Sports, classic roadster - modern technology. NA1800, 99 head, 11:1 +2mm Wiseco pistons, Link LEM, Alloy f/wheel, JR headers.

Good point Euen, so stick with the known brands, Sony, Pioneer, Alpine etc
(but not BOSE) so you will be able to buy the adaptor cable from
Repco/supercheap/TradeMe and the installation becomes a 1000 times easier.

i had to put a small computor fan under my head unit to blow air up through my panasonic cd player as it kept shutting down on long trips or during the summer. i just had it wired to the "aux" 12v to come on when the igntion was on. problem solved.
