POSTING ETTIQUITE - What not to do on this forum...

Post by zorruno » Thu May 11, 2006 5:05 pm

Do you want to have your posts moderated or removed? No? Well please read through the following simple posting rules:
Updated: 31 July 09

1. Don’t Double Post
Click to send your post once. If you use your browser to go back, edit it and send it again, it will end up on the forum twice. It this happens more than a few times, you will likely have your future posts moderated.

2. Don’t Cross Post
Do not enter the same forum post (whether by the forum entry, or via email) into more than one forum topic. Stick to the most relevant topic or forum. If you do this you will likely have future posts moderated, and you will likely be banned if this happens more than a couple of times.

3. Don’t Submit Advertising, or use a signature that describes your business
There is no reason for you to have your business details in your signature or footer – even if it relates to MX5s. You are welcome to have a small signature with your name and a few details if you like (maybe about your MX5?) but don’t let it get out of hand. If you have a company email account you must use, and it is impossible to remove the footer or signature from your email (e.g. it is added after you send it) let the Forum admin know and they can set up a rule to automatically delete your signature when it arrives. Repeat abusers of this rule will likely find themselves banned. There is generally no problem with responding to a relevant post if you stock or sell a particular item someone is interested in however - just use common sense.

4. Bottom Post (i.e. please do not top post) & Tidy Up Your Posts
Ensure when you post in a forum and use the 'quote' feature, or receive a forum post by email and respond to it, you trim off all the unnecessary fluff from the person(s) who posted before you. Then type your response BELOW what they have typed, being sure to leave all the “>” marks so that the forum software knows to treat whatever the last people posted as a quote. (Try it - preferably in the chat forum, and you’ll see what we mean). If you don’t do this, the forum post will look horrible, and people won’t be able to read your reply. If you continue to forget to trim the rubbish off of your emails, you are likely to have future posts blocked, as moderators shouldn't have to clean up your posts.

5. Use Images Responsibly
You can place images and photos in your posts, by uploading as an attachment, linking to an external source or sending one via email. Use this feature responsibly, and think or others when doing so. Remember, photos and images can take a while for people to download - especially if people have dialup internet only. Do not use images in your signature, or for reasons other than specifically showing something useful otherwise you are likely to have your posts moderated, or be banned. People posting advertising banners will be banned immediately.

6. Submit Useful Information And Responses
Ensure that the information you submit is relevant, in the correct forum or topic, and obeys the site rules. Posts stating 'me too', or 'hahaha' don't really add much to a useful forum about MX5s.

7. Search Through The Archives
If you have a question that you think may have been asked before, try using the search function in case someone has posted helpful information beforehand that may give you an answer.

8. Be Helpful
If you know the answer to a post, you have helpful information, or you know where the answer is, please be helpful and post a reply. Even if your answer just tells the person where to look, the forum community is designed to help others who have questions about the MX5. Your knowledge is valuable, and it will help this community to prosper.

9. There Are No Stupid Questions
Although sometimes people don't think through their posts properly before hitting submit, there are no 'stupid' questions, so please don't 'flame' the novice. Questions may also get asked again and again by new members as the forum progresses, that is fine – the forum exists to be a help to both experienced and new MX5 enthusiasts.

10. Use A Sensible Subject Line
If you are asking about Acme Soft Top cleaning polish & where to buy it in Paraparaumu, a sensible subject line is not "Hey guys. Where can I get this stuff?". This helps people search through messages for exactly the info they require. Remember, there may be a lot of posts on this forum, and a useful & sensible subject line is often the key to whether they read, or ignore. The moderators may even change the subject for you if it is not sensible, but they should really not have to.

11. Don't Change Subject Mid Topic
If a topic starts to change mid conversation, please start a new topic. If you don't, the moderators might split the topic up for you, and start a new one anyway. You can always state this in the forum e.g. 'the subject is getting off topic so I've started a new topic in the Power forum', and this will help people who have been following the current conversation to know to look elsewhere.

12. Ask one question only in a thread or post
If you have multiple questions, please ask them in separate threads. This helps keep conversations in the right place and each conversation about one topic. Otherwise a conversation may get split and hard to read, or you may only get answers about part of your query. Two Questions? Two Posts.
