i upgraded tyres recently from the re001 to the re002

re001 = great tyre in the dry gets sticky not so good in the wet needs heat for traction

re002 = better feel and more grip about 15% more in dry + 25% better than re001 in the wet

each re002 fitted was $170 195 50 15
each re001 fited was $175 195 50 15

directional tyres are far superior than asymetrics in the way they wear, also when you have a blow out you will have to replace both tyres, IMHO Toyo T1r Proxes are better tyres the compund is better

edit: and they disperse water better

I have to say it's really frustrating choosing a tyre, as the common comparison people make with RE001/2 is the T1R. The majority of commentary I've heard on the difference though is that the T1R has (understandably) slightly better wet grip, but that the sidewalls are rather weak and the tyre seems to "squirm" when hot. Also that the T1R rapidly loses its grip as it wears, while the RE001/2 seems to stay consistent until the end.

I had T1R's on my GTI Golf, my brother had them on his VR6 Golf, I can say without a doubt that if you live on country roads and tend to have a little fun they certainly wear very quickly.

Also one day I managed to pitch myself at an angle of 90 degrees without warning, pretty sure that was driver error though. Certainly exciting.

I've never tried the RE001's, you get people saying their shit but then also others saying they provide decent performance for the wear rate etc?

Well I plan to get the RE001s when I need new tyres later this year. Your post was far more informative than the previous one and seems to be what others have said. If a tyre blew out on my car I'd replace the opposite side as well just to keep the wear the same

For me I don't have much choice - I'm running NA8 14x6" wheels so T1Rs don't appear to be an option for me anyway!

I'm quite lucky then, to have used the T1R, the goodyear GSD3 and now I'm onto the RE001s. I rate the GSD3 far superior to the T1R, I found them far too squirmy and they only lasted me 15k before they needed replacing, the GSD3 lasted a lot longer, gripped a lot better (especially on a hot day) but they were VERY noisy. Now I'm onto the RE001 which has out lasted both tyres and still going (nearing 30k of driving now), I find turn in not quite as responsive but overall grip exceeds both the T1R and the GSD3 in the dry, though the GSD3 gripped better in the wet.

Overall I rate them as:

RE001>GSD3>T1R>DZ101

What sort of prices are you guys finding for the RE001s? For me tyre noise and wear rate is something I find important, after grip of course.

Edit: Hyper at $201 per tyre for 185 55 14s.

I put a set of RE001s on my NC a while ago. Replaced the original
Michelins. I can't compare the grip as I don't drive fast enough to get near
the limits but what I did notice was a large reduction in road noise
compared to the OEM Michelins.
Did two return trips from Blenheim to Nelson yesterday in heavy rain and the
grip was very good in the tight corners in the hills. Not too fast but I
find I can get away from most other vehicles under normal dry conditions so
probably not too slow either!
I particularly enjoy leaving boy racers behind in their lowered no
suspension travel machinery but then that's usually not too difficult
either.

Got a gud deal from Hyper bort (4) 205/50/15 RE001's $190 each fitted n balanced n $59 for wheel alignment changed from directional's big reduction in road noise n stick like "poo" 2 a planket

Thats pretty good, definitely aiming to replace my tyres with RE001s then, just a matter of tracking down some lightweight 14's to replace my ones.

What have you got at the moment?

You'll be hard-pressed to find reasonably-priced 14s that weigh less than factory alloys.

I was in the same position, and managed to nab a set of the latter for $100 on TradeMe, which are now half painted gold (that is, two gold and two needing paint) - all I can say is keep an eye out!

I really would like to upgrade to something wider and more flush, but at the same time I'm happy with the NA8 factory alloys because at the end of the day, function > form, even though form is nice :D

Yeah my ultimate goal is run some nice 15's for on the street, then the lightweight 14's on the track. But I'm poor so the 14's will do for now :D
